Another interesting piece in the Post regarding the RIF

It was written by a first year teacher who was RIFFED. It brought tears to my eyes (and not because I felt sorry for her). What is happening to the students at Shaed Elementary is inexcusable. Basically, the teacher was fired - but she was the only third grade teacher. Now her students will have to be split between the 2nd grade and the 4th grades. How will any of these students succeed?

Shaed is a preK thru 8 school with an enrollment target of 172, actual enrollment of 152. I agree that the piece is poignant and sad. However, the class size for the 2/3 and 3/4 blended classes is probably still reasonable by DCPS standards.

If Rhee had managed properly, and kids started the year in this setting, then likely could have been fine. . . .. if

I see mismanagement as being the most favorable explanation for what's happened with this school year start up.

A school as small as Shaed probably should not exist. Knowing nothing more than the size of the student body, I'd imagine it is at risk of closure. Very few DCPS schools have less than 200 kids.

I am not condoning what happened to this teacher and I don't know the specifics about the combined class plan, but just FYI - Capital City Charter School which is considered one of the top charters in DC has combined grade classes of prek/k, 1/2, 3/4 etc.

The difference between Cap City's combined classes and DCPS is that one was done with purpose and one was done out of desperation. Cap City staffs it's combined classes with a teacher, an aide, and an inclusion specialist. The curriculum and mission supports the combined classrooms. Shaed has been forced to combine the classes. And although it is a workable solution and may very well benefit kids at various levels of social and academic development, that only works when the school rallies around the staff and offers the support and resources to make it a success.

1o:14 What 11;46 said. Yes it's planned this way, the curriculum is built around this model, the teachers are trained to teach to it.
