Just got my 2nd graders report card, is it worth contacting the school?

I just received my 2nd graders report card and I'm kind of perplexed at the difference between the final grades and the progress report we received. The progress report showed straight A's.

Most notably he dropped from an A in the Reading subcategory, Reading - Informational Text on his interim progress report to a C on his report card. He's reading at level P, and his report card notes that he's reading a year or more above grade level. He has difficulty with writing so the B's in writing doesn't surprise me, but a C in reading when he's a year or more advanced is odd.

On his report card he got straight A's in Math (with enrichment), Science, Social Studies, Art, Phys Ed. and Music. He got mostly B's in Reading (Reading: Literature- B, Language: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use- A) and Writing (Informative/Explanatory- B, Narrative- A, Process, Production, and Research- B, Use of Language- B).

This is surprising because as a part of his 504 (ADHD) his teacher is required to email me daily about his behavior as well as if he's completing his work and I received no heads up about this. I got good reports all quarter and he tested into "GT" for next year. Is it worth contacting the school about this or am I being ridiculous?

You can try calling but there's a 99% chance nobody is there who can answer your questions. You're better off just letting it go and working on developing a progress plan with the new teachers in the fall.

You're not being ridiculous. You're confused and want to know what happened. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm an elementary school principal, and I think it's fine to email the principal and teacher with your question:

Hi--
I just received Larlo's report card and have a question. I noticed that he went from an A to a C in reading. This is a big jump, and it doesn't match with his reading above grade level. Did I miss something or was this a keystroke error? Is there something I should working on with him over the summer?

Thanks so much.

This approach seems very reasonable to me.

First PP is right. You're not going to get a response. Schools out and teachers are off for the summer. Principal won't know anything about it. Your best bet is to put together a strategy for the fall, which might include talking to last years teacher.

This is how school works. Reading level is separate from performance on whatever assessments teacher is giving him in class day to day. My kid walked into first grade reading level Z. Does that mean she gets an A in reading guaranteed until 6th grade? No. She actually has to work every year so the teacher can record evidence of performance.

Definitely reach out to the school and NO HARVARD FOR HIM!

Seriously OP, this is 2nd grade. No one cares and nor should you.

They don't care. Been there, done that. Had an IEP meeting and they said everything was great. Report card two days later with a D. We get no work back so have no idea what grades are based on.

Depending on his potential, they might have felt a D was fine.

What school gives letter grades for 2nd grade?

School's out, no one will answer your email. And 2nd grade is done, so don't go to his old teacher in the fall and ask about it. Just move on.

I don't understand your point about the teacher's lack of daily emails. Those grades don't indicate behavior problems or not finishing work.

The teacher is required to email you every single day? That teacher has already gone over and beyond for a student who is above grade level.

Don't be dense. A reading grade dropping from A to C with no explanation is concerning. This isn't about Harvard. It's about making sure there's no issue that suddenly came up that the parent is missing.

NP. You're an ass PP. How nice that your children don't have special needs. If they did you would know that staying on top of academic performance is a huge part of a SN parent's job because our kids don't just "catch up".

Send it to the teacher and copy the grade level VP or principal (whatever is most appropriate for your school). Someone will respond.

Better yet, send it next Tuesday. With exclamation points.
