Hi - I'm going for my first OB visit next Friday. I will be seven weeks at that point.
Is that too early to do an ultrasound? Can you detect a heartbeat yet? Thanks in advance! |

Congratulations! It depends on your OB. Some may do one to confirm the pregnancy. Don't get excited, your baby is kind of a "blob" on the screen at that point so no adorable fingers and toes to look at. And while you might see the heartbeat, it's typically too early to hear it.
Other OB's may wait until the next visit around the end of the first trimester -- especially if you're doing the nuchal test since an ultrasound is required for that. |
| Congrats! It also depends on if you are in a high risk category or not and what your insurance will cover. Since I was not high risk, my insurance only covered one ultrasound at 20 weeks. It would be good to find out what your insurance will cover. |
| My OB did because there had been a miscarriage scare, and we did hear the heartbeat (6-7 weeks). |
| It depends on the OB. Some ob do routine ultrasound checks in their office---on basic equipment. |
| depends on the OB. Mine (GU) did one at my first OB appointment (7 weeks) and we were able to see the heartbeat. |

My first appointment was 7 weeks and we saw and heard the heartbeat. I specifically asked for an ultrasound because I'd been spotting and I was worried but I think they would have done it anyway. You can check with your insurance in advance to see if they cover it (mine covers anything that's medically necessary) and then just ask your OB to do one.
Congratulations! |
If the U/S is done early on, you won't necessarily hear a heartbeat, but you may be able to SEE a heartbeat. Also, early U/S are usually the transvaginal variety...not comfortable
