Hi, My son is turning 9 tomorrow and would like brownies brought to class instead of cupcakes. Does anyone have any good brownie recipes/ideas for a birthday?
Thank you! |
| Best brownies ever are made from Ghirardelli's Sweet Ground Chocolate. It's like cocoa powder that's pre-sweetened. The brownie recipe is on the back of the can. I've bought it at Harris Teeter and World Market and Wegmans. I've made brownies from probably 30 different recipes and these are still the best. |
| No Pudge fudge brownies (a boxed mix) are excellent, cheap and easy. |

Best is really subjective. I cut a recipe out of a women's magazine recently that swore it was the best recipe and that everyone on the magazine's staff agreed event hough they can never agree on brownies. Well...the kids, DH and I hated them.
The Ghiardelli box mix is pretty good. I got it at Food Lion while passing through Shenandoah County so I don't know if anybody carries it in town. |

Ina Garten's Outrageous Brownies are hands down mouth-watering amazing!!! Oh my goodness! You will love them! The recipe is on foodnetwork.com but here it is:
Ingredients 1 pound unsalted butter 1 pound plus 12 ounces semisweet chocolate chips, divided 6 ounces unsweetened chocolate 6 extra-large eggs 3 tablespoons instant coffee powder 2 tablespoons real vanilla extract 2 1/4 cups sugar 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, divided (1 cup for batter and 1/4 cup in the chips and nuts) 1 tablespoon baking powder 1 teaspoon kosher salt 3 cups diced walnut pieces Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 13 by 18 by 1 1/2-inch sheet pan. Melt together the butter, 1 pound chocolate chips, and unsweetened chocolate on top of a double boiler. Cool slightly. Stir together the eggs, instant coffee, vanilla and sugar. Stir in the warm chocolate mixture and cool to room temperature. Stir together 1 cup of the flour, baking powder and salt. Add to cooled chocolate mixture. Toss the walnuts and 12 ounces of chocolate chips with 1/4 cup flour to coat. Then add to the chocolate batter. Pour into prepared pan. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until tester just comes out clean. Halfway through the baking, rap the pan against the oven shelf to allow air to escape from between the pan and the brownie dough. Do not over-bake! Cool thoroughly, refrigerate well and cut into squares. We eat brownies all the time - Duncan Hines Double Chunk chocolate are awesome!!!!! And then Ghirardelli Double Chunk Chocolate (on sale right now at Chevy Chase Market 2 boxes for $4). But Ina's homemade are the best! |
only if you are on a diet. these don't compare to the real thing. |

PP Ina poster here -
you could also frost the brownies with yummy Duncan Hines vanilla frosting but don't do that to Ina's because it would be too rich. |
I'm naturally thin and eat whatever I want to. I LOVE these brownies! I usually add extra yogurt to make them more chewy and less cake-like. |
I guess that's why you are naturally thin. |

| Another vote for the Ghiradelli boxed brownie mix. They are ridiculously good. |
| I love the Ghiradelli boxed mix too! They taste so much better than the other boxed mixes. |
| OP, keep in mind that the brownies are for kids. I think kids may prefer Ducan Hines to Ghiradelli. As far as regular grocery store brands go, I prefer the Duncan Hines that comes with a fudge package, and made with 1 egg (fudgy) as opposed to 2 (cake like). Don't over cook! For 9 year olds, adding some mini marshmellows to the mix could be great, or smearing some marshmellow fluff on top. Stay away from nuts! Most kids don't like brownies with nuts. |
| 15:24 again. For a birthday, it would also be fun to add mini M&Ms to the brownie mix or to layer them on top just before the brownies are done baking. Or maybe bright colorful sugar crystals sprinkled over the top. |
I've admittedly never had these, but let's be real. I refuse to believe that anything with "No Pudge" in the title is anywhere near as good as the Ghiradelli brownies, or the Ina Garten recipe. No. Way. No. How. |
