In need of a reliable, comfortable SUV with a 3rd row spacious enough to hold tween/teen boys. We tend to buy cars that are 1-2 years old and run them into the ground.
Which one is worth a look? Any special features I just have to have? |
We had a loaner Highlander last summer and the third row is very cramped. I would not plan to have teen boys sit back there on a regular basis. |
I currently drive a highlander and agree, the third row is small, but would be fine for short trips/carpooling. I’ve sat back there as a 5’6” adult, and while not the most comfortably, it wasn’t terrible.
That said, if you’re using the third row, you’ll have NO trunk space! But I love my highlander ![]() |
I love, love, love my Highlander - but the 3rd row is in use only in desparate situations. It's cramped and there's zero space in the back when it's up. |
I love my new Honda Pilot. I thought it felt roomier than the Highlander in the cabin. That is also what a lot of car reviews say. |
We recently purchased a Pilot. We originally thought we’d buy a Highlander because we’re a Toyota family. But that 3rd row felt cramped to me at 5 ft tall. There was no way my teens would be comfortable. The Pilot has lots of headroom and a decent amoint of legroom for a 3rd row. My teen (5 ft 6in) fits comfortably. It’s also easier to get in than some other 3rd rows. There’s a nice push button that automatically slides the 2nd row forward. We also bought the bucket seats so you can climb between to access the back. The car handles great. We love it!

All are equally junk.
Buy a Ford. *Formation of Bald eagle soars overhead* *Whispers* “First On Race Day” |
I went on a road trip in my friend's 2018 Pilot and was so impressed by how roomy it is. I also love the captain's chair options for the 2nd row - makes 3rd row access much easier and the 2nd row middle seat is not really used much anyway. I love our MDX but the 3rd row seats are not something I'd want to use every day. |
“Fix Or Repair Daily” If you ain’t first, you’re last! |
I love my Santa Fe. It isn’t roomy in back, but neither was the Highlander I test drove. |
Every time my mom gets in my new Pilot, she immediately starts saying how comfortable the seat is ![]() |
The 2018 Explorers got really poor safety ratings. We almost bought one. Really liked it. Ford's excuse was they are coming out with a new model in 2019 so they don't care about fixing it. |
Sorento!!!!!! We love ours. LOVE IT!! |
It's not on your list, but we have a GMC Acadia and it actually is quite comfortable in the 3rd row. Also, the previous model (they were redone in 2017, we have a 2016) has more cargo space than a Yukon with the 3rd row down, which is why we got it over the Yukon. I had a carpooler in the 3rd row just this morning. We have a Denali trim with 2 captains chairs in the middle row. The Buick Enclave is another to consider, I personally don't like the styling, but it's basically the same thing. Friends have Pilots and I just hate the console, the 3rd row was actually fine, but all the buttons drive me nuts (I also dislike Acuras for this reason). Other friends have a Highlander and it's too small.
I had a 2007 Santa Fe years ago and LOVED that car, I would totally get another Santa Fe, but the 3rd row is cramped and no cargo space. |
Well I’d like to quote the late great Colonel Sanders. He said, “I’m too druunk...to taste this chicken.” |
