How common is a math or reading MAP score at the 99th percentile in this area?

Likely to be admitted to a gifted program? Or just like everyone else so fine in general ed?

I don’t know how concentrated they are in this area, but my kid has had 99th percentile on MAPs consistently and 99th percentile on CoGat and did not get into the CES gifted program.

Same with my kid. And there are at least two more children DS is friends with at his school who scored 99% all around and were not accepted.

It's hard to say exactly how common it is, but it's not uncommon. My kid was admitted to a CES and he typically scored in the 99percentile 2-4 grades ahead depending on the year.

It depends on where in MCPS. W clusters, probably not that uncommon. I think MCPS publishes PARCC scores by each schools. You can get a sense of what cluster/schools would have a high % of students with 99% MAP scores.

We've got plenty of 99% MAP scores in the BCC cluster and other parts of Maryland too.

Any teachers on here who can weigh in on how often they see 99th%?

OP,

At grade level MAP 99th percentile is really easy. It is based nation wide sample. This area is known to have many high achievers

I got my DC MAP-M score from 3rd Grade (fall) of 244 to 5th Grade of 295 --- not gifted at all

You can’t really go by what parents tell you, because lots of people lie, lie, lie.

No need to be so offended. I don't live in a W cluster, but what I stated is pretty true. OP is asking for how "common", which would mean more than at least 40% or so.

Also, BCC is considered on the wealthy side, so I wouldn't be surprised that BCC has a high number of them.

I don't think you can take MAP out of grade level, but maybe I am misunderstanding. Are you talking about comparing the RIT score with RIT scores in higher grade levels?

295 is extremely high for for fifth grade. What makes you say 'not gifted?'

I think these are fairly common in the magnet population. Same for other exams - Raven, (also terranova, once upon a time), parcc, magnet admission tests, cogat, SAT, ACT, IB, AP.

In my street, every second kid is 99 percentile. Everyone provided academic after school programs and it pays off.

At our school it's a few per class, but that is very high compared to the rest of the United States. In other parts it's 1 per about three classes - the definition of 99th percentile. So you might have only 1-2 at even the larger schools.
