Why is Northeastern (NEU) so popular with both parents and students these days?

Yeah, my jaw dropped when I read that in the NYT article

Same. I was completely puzzled why DS’ friends were gunning for Northeastern. It wasn’t a school that got even a glance when DH and I were college kids.

Seems some of the DCUM posters, the “haters” if you will, latch onto anything they can to justify their having been rejected.

What was the word used upthread? In regard to OP and/or PP getting his panties in a twist about being denied admission? Not having visited the school? And calling anyone in disagreement with his name calling a “booster”? Imagine seeing the world so black and white?

DELICIOUS.

DP. YOU are the person who keeps asserting someone (or everyone?) was denied admission, but, I haven't seen anyone on this thread who was!

Too much sugar for you, Kool-Aid Man booster/marketer. (That PP got it perfectly right).

We visited. DD did not apply. In at T10. Over all the NEU spin and this marketer making up crap and sucking tge air out if the room. Thanks to the PP for the NYT article. Interesting. Not surprised.

OH YEAH!

DELICIOUS.

Seems if the hater and their two friends would stop, posters wouldn’t respond with facts.

Fascinating.

The reason this thread hasn’t been cut, IMHO, is that another NEU thread will soon arise, and crazy booster will flip out as soon as anything remotely critical of NEU is said. Once there’s blood in the waters, everyone will come to watch and maybe throw a couple of steaks in to watch everyone go crazy. I am neutral/positive about NEU and just come here to watch the show. Very sad to admit it, but I am bored when booster baby doesn’t come on and say something nuts.

In two years NEU will have a -2% acceptance rate and be the first college to dip into negative numbers making it the most coveted university in the world. Fact!

From afar, it looks like the haters and trolls are driving this discussion. Not sure what the point that they are trying to make is?

Trolls incite by making outlandish claims, to be reinforced by more trolls.

Usually you see this sort of juvenile behavior with political or sports team discussions.

Occasionally you see it with UChicago and Washington U posts, but Northeastern does seem to attract the crazy hating trolls.

Definitely not a bad school but gaming the rankings has left a sour taste in people’s mouth.

Hey booster, is this a fact?

The rankings from over ten years ago or the article written today by the Trump staffer?

Are you not able to choose a college yourself without resorting to anonymous boards?

Musn’t be such a bad school if OP and friends have been campaigning for 50 pages! Keep it up though!

Haven't read too many NEU threads started by boosters.

Many NEU haters however. Don't know why. It definitely won't stop the applications, popularity, selectivity.

OMG thank you for sharing that...had to google the article, but here's the gifted link in case anyone missed it. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/01/opinion/college-admissions-applications.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ok0.bqiN.Xwr6tn5gI9pk&smid=url-share

Holy cow, lsdy, you gotta get a grip on your anti-NEU hate. It's consuming you. But I guess a backhanded complement from some editorial about how selective Northeastern is much still chap your hide. A long time ago, according to rankings the opinion writer disses, Northeastern used to be lower ranked.

But as they say, that was then, this is now! So suck it up buttercup, your boomer thoughts are relevant, because the girl quoted in the article was applying to Ivies...and little old Northeastern!!!!

Pretty nice to see a school operating as a school.

Student tour groups are also happening. They essentially will have tour groups each weekday through the summer. When people wonder why so many apply, the proximity to BC, BU, Tufts, Harvard, MIT, Babson, Wellesley, Emerson has a built in advantage over other cities. Many, many come for college tours because you can visit so many in such a short time. Obviously not every college will cross pollinate with prospective students, but Boston is the top draw in the country for college visits.

+1

DC did tours during spring break, loves the Boston area, and will be applying to NEU and a few of the schools you mentioned above. Hoping for an acceptance to at least one of them.

That’s the way to go. My kid also fell in love with the whole Boston vibe. Applied to 4 of the schools on the list. 3 admits, one WL. Committed based on several factors, buy not any current ranking of admission rate.

I think that is why you see so many applications to schools like BU and NEU. International students are a big part of the applicant pool, and the reputations of the school carry a lot of weight when they hear from their friends/family who have experienced school in Boston.

+1

The four years of college life in Boston, which are not reflected at all in the rankings, along with other experiences, are truly invaluable.
