| We've inundated with canvassers (mostly very young teens) handing out flyers etc for the various races (delegate, executive, Congressional primaries) in close-in MoCo. Just now my child called to me to say that there was a woman in front of our house going through our mailbox - he happened to see her through the window. I went to the door and it turns out she was canvassing for the MD delegate race and went through our mailbox to get our first names to include a personal note (that she signed with her own name.) This strikes me as wildly inappropriate. Am I wrong? |
| No, you’re not wrong. You might want to call the campaign office and tell them. |
| Going through your mail is too much but, other than that, good for them for being involved and trying to get others involved. |
|
It's illegal to touch the contents of your mailbox.
Was she wearing a green shirt? For All Our Neighborhoods or something like that? |
No, it's not illegal to touch your mailbox or the contents. It's illegal to OPEN your mail. But that's not what she was doing. Stop being such a drama queen. |
Are they 13? What she did was intrusive, but not illegal. Tell her to fob off. |
| Not in MoCo, but I was just listening to WTOP and they had a story about Leopold in AA Co. forcing his way in some ladies house. Seems there are other complaints about him also. I would have punched the MFer until he left. That goes for anyone trying to enter my house. |
Not the PP, but as someone who canvasses for political candidates I've always been taught not to touch the mailbox because you can't put campaign literature in the mailbox and therefore have no good reason to be messing with someone's mail. It's very poor form. |
Whether it's illegal or not, I am not sure. But I would call the postal inspectors and let them sort it out. BUT if I see anybody in my mailbox whether it's illegal or not, that person will have a problem. And I don't think with the problem of identity theft, the person is being a drama queen at all. |
Wrong. It is illegal to open someone else's mailbox. I'll look up the code and get back. Think about it, do you want someone going through your mail? It is illegal to put flyers in mailboxes, too. |
It could be considered "tresspassing." It should be illegal to go through someone's mail without their permission. I think the person could be charged for looking for the name. |
| Whoa! Not ok! I’d call the office she was campaigning for and complain. |
I'd call the postal police. They would not look at this kindly. And, yes, there is a "postal police." And, they take their jobs seriously. |
Exactly. A mailbox is federal property. I delivered newspapers. That’s why everyone had a separate plastic tube for the paper. You can’t put it in a mailbox. |
