I always see those lists of "100 places to take your kids before they grow up" and it feels too overwhelming. I'm not going to take 100 vacations in the 14 or so years that I have to travel with them! So I've been trying to come up with a Top 10 list instead, with a goal of giving kids exposure to the diversity of America. Interested in your thoughts (and this is not in any particular order):
1. Washington, DC 2. New York City 3. Another American city of cultural/historical note, such as San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New Orleans or L.A. 4. Hawaii or U.S. Virgin Islands 5. Disneyworld or Disneyland 6. American southwest, such as Tucson, San Antonio, Taos, etc. 7. National Park with major mountains, such as Tetons, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain, Glacier, Denali 8. Grand Canyon and/or Zion 9. A classic beach area, such as Cape Cod, Outer Banks, Assoteague, etc. 10. Go back and hit another city from (3), from a different region of the country. What do you think? I realize I'm a little light on the Midwest and South. |

This is a great list.
Here's my wish list (in no particular order): 1. Grand Canyon 2. Redwoods 3. Wyoming or Montana for a dude ranch 4. luxury farmstay at a vineyard in California 5. Acadia 6. Hawaii 7. Austin 8. Hiking/biking around Colorado 9. Chatauqua 10. Skiing in Utah Bonus (because I can't pick only 10!) -- family camp in Vermont, Seattle/Portland visit |
| I'd say scratch #4 and put: Pacific NW instead. |
It's a great list, op! My two cents (if you have to prioritize or eliminate some): 1. Disneyworld is far better than Disneyland. 2. The San Diego area is more fun for school-aged kids than SF or LA. LA would be more fun for tweens/teens. 3. We love Puerto Rico. I think it's worth adding to your list. 4. We love the Caribbean. A Disney cruise is magical with kids---even if your family doesn't particularly like Disney. 5. Head across the border into Canada. Montreal and Old Quebec are fabulous! Your kids will feel like it's a big trip since they speak French there and QC has a European feel. 6. Hershey and Lancaster are a fun short trip. So is Williamsburg/Busch Gardens. 7. Charleston/Kiawah would be a great two-fer (better than OBX IMHO). |
Tell me more about this, please! |
Tyler Place. |

I think Pp was being sarcastic. Tyler Place should not be on anyone’s top 10 list |
I want to know more about #4. We've done vineyards as a day trip from SF, but that was before kids. |
| We took a cross-country Amtrak trip using a "pass" and stopped at a bunch of places - Aspen, Yellowstone (from Salt Lake), San Francisco, Seattle, and Glacier. Two 1/2 days in Chicago. This took 3 weeks. I would like to do a few more of those with all the long-distance routes. |
Have you been there? It is awesome. |
NP. I've never been and not sure if I'd enjoy it, but I'm in a FB group where people were raving about this place. |
Planning note re #1: PCH is still closed just south of Big Sur. |
PCH is lovely, but I had to get off the road because the twists and turns were making me carsick! |
