Any fun or interesting places to stop between DC and Raleigh-Durham? |
There is a garden in downtown Richmond that is supposedly great. |
Stop for lunch, take the dog for a walk, beer? |
Richmond
Charlottesville That’s about it. Ain’t nothing south of Richmond other than rural woods, truck stops, and fast food. |
You can find some delicious homemade BBQ in a road side shack |
I'm from Durham so we do this drive a few times a year. There's plenty to do in Richmond--kids' museum, I think, river walk, restaurants. Charlottesville is not on the way unless you take a detour to get there, and this would add maybe 2 hours to the trip.
PP is right that south of Richmond there just isn't much til you get to Durham. |
Charlottesville only adds about an hour and it’s a much more scenic drive. |
VMFA In Richmond |
Ralph's BBQ in Weldon, NC - great pork BBQ and hush puppies |
Yes and yes! |
In Richmond there is a childrens museum alongside the Science museum. Side by side, both nice places to visit.

Richmond native here. I second the PP’s above who mentioned the children’s museum and VMFA (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. Also, Maymont Park! |
Maybe I missed something but we go to Chapel Hill often and went via Charlottesrsville once. It was slightly more scenic, but really nothing special and more annoying because you are on rods where all of the sudden there is a stop light. OP it is really not a long drive to Raleigh and there isn't much on the way, why the desire to stop along the way? |
