I think it may be best to delete my thread on the social skills forum: "My Advice to Other Parents of kids with HFA: SOCIAL SKILLS, social skills, social skills!!!" I think the wording I chose could have been more sensitive and I don't think it is doing anything helpful. It seems to be enraging and scaring a lot of parents and I haven't gotten constructive feedback about how to handle the first situation I mentioned better. While some have given some really thought provoking feedback, quite a few have gotten so enraged that it may be best to remove it all. I think it's easy at least for me to think things are going well so I can ease up on the playdates or social skills interventions and for me it's a reminder that I have to keep pushing. For others, it seems to have just made them frustrated because they are doing so much and it's like I am just pouring salt on wounds.
On the other hand I do think stalking behavior in the autism community is a concern people need to be aware of and even if some have little geniuses, if they don't keep getting social skills interventions they may really suffer. However, I don't think I have the eloquence to convey my thoughts in a way that would help other parents and spark interesting discussion rather than set off rage. Plus, to be honest, I seem to be setting off my OCD tendencies because I keep taking breaks from my own work to check the responses! Perhaps my kid got some of his tendencies from me! Before I ruin anyone else's day, perhaps it is best to delete. TIA! Oh and maybe once you delete it you can close or delete this thread as I wouldn't be surprised if the rage came over here once that one is gone. These families have enough stress and I don't need to ruin anyone else's day! |
