Boots and Tights -- yeah or nay?

Anonymous
I've noticed that boots and tights are all the rage this year -- particularly ankle boots with short skirts and tights. I have a lot of ankle boots but I've always just worn them under jeans or pants when at the office. I only wear knee-high boots with skirts.

I've seen this look on the models and have to say that I'm not sure it's flattering even on them. I also googled this topic and found a lot of articles with completely different opinions: if you wear jeans with your ankle boots, make sure the hem is above the top of boot. If you wear jeans with your ankle boots, make sure the hem is below the top of the boot, or you will look ridiculous. Ankle boots are no good with any skirt below the knee. Ankle boots are good with skirts above the knee. Wear your ankle boots with tights off the same color -- a monochromatic look is more slimming. Don't wear them with tights of the same color, it's not flattering. There is no point to just wearing your ankle boots under your jeans. There is a point, as you get the look of a boot without the bulkiness of a long boot under your jeans. Your ankle boots should have a heel to be slimming. Your ankle boots should be flat to be slimming. You should only wear your ankle boots tucked into your skinny jeans. Go ahead and tuck your normal jeans into your ankle boots.

HELP!!

As I said, in the past I have only worn ankle boots under my boot cut jeans. I just bought two very low-heel ankle boots that I wanted just for comfort -- for taking long walks with the dogs and stuff. Yet with all this hype I somehow see myself pictured in one of those magazines, with my eyes covered over, as a fashion no-no.

All of the articles concede the ankle boots with tights look is a hard one to pull off, and I'm starting to think it is just another fad like feathered hair or perms or thong leotards and maybe I should just ignore it.

Thoughts?

OP again. My boots just arrived from Zappos and I have to say they fit and feel like a dream.

I got these: http://www.zappos.com/santana-jenna-espresso-leather-w-shearling

And these: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/p/7545986/c/3.html

What say you, DCUMs? I'll probably keep them anyway because I love them so much, but would like your thoughts anyway. Also, on the Santana, would you wear it cuffed or uncuffed? If you would wear these boots, please tell me how you would wear and pair them. If you wouldn't wear these boots, please so state and tell me why.

Much thanks. I love DCUMs. Even when it hurts, it hurts so good.

Are you talking about booties, or more like a half boot (like in PP's links)? I'm really digging the booties and tights look and it is totally appropriate for work too.

I am NOT a fashionista, but a working mom with dogs and a love of being comfortable in the outdoors who hopes she doesn't look like a dork.

I would not wear these boots with skirts, unless it was for a quick jaunt down the block with the dogs to let them pee before heading to work, or from the car to the office in the snow.

They are awesome boots for wearing with jeans or casual cotton pants.

If a straight leg, roll the cuff to just touch the top of the boot. Either be sassy and wear fun socks, or socks to match your pants color.

If a boot or flare that won't roll well, wear them over the boot, so long as they don't drag on the ground.

OP here, and the PP with the links -- both

The distinction between an ankle boot and a bootie is one that confuses me a bit, too. I think I have ankle boots. Booties are supposed to stop before they hit your ankle, I think. Like, at the top of your foot.

The first boots would probably look cute with thick tights and a very casual cotton or corduroy almost-mini or A-line skirt. Or you could wear them under pants/jeans.

The second pair - wear with pants/jeans only, they are just too outdoorsy/casual.

Do we need to wear socks with our knee-high boots? I don't like to but my husband thinks I should.

Ankle boots and booties are the same thing and the height will vary on them depending upon the designer.

I think wearing them with dresses and skirts is a really fresh and modern style and will make you appear current without looking silly. If you're hesitant, get a dark color and match the tight with the boot.

Just make sure that the width and height of the bootie top hits you at a flattering place. It should be at the skinniest part of your ankle/foot area. Anything that hits at a wide place will make you look like you have cankles.

I am sorry OP but I think they are ugly and drab.

That's OK

I'm not in love with either pair. I really would just stick with jeans or pants if I were to wear them.

If I am correct, booties hit under your ankle. I think the right ankle boot with tights would be great with a skirt.

I've always found that if I have to ask, the answer is NO. I can usually tell when I look at something (which comes with age and experience, in my case!) whether it will look good on me or not.

I think these are really casual boots meant to be worn with casual pants/jeans. They look like they'd be great for walking the dogs through the woods. I am not a fan of the short boot/skirt look but the only way to pull that off is dressy boots.

Those really look like outdoor boots to me. You'll look like you came in from a hike if you wear them to work.

OK. Thanks to all -- even the negative ones! I have dressier ankle boots in my closet with heels and we'll see what I'll do with them. But I am in love with these casual boots, and my husband loves them on me. I wear them with jeans on Saturdays, and they make me really happy. I looked at every pair Zappos was selling before I got these.

And I just may wear those brown ones cuffed over with a skirt and brown tights. My office is casual and I have nice legs.
