Estate planning documents

We have a net worth of about $2m -- what type of estate planning docs do we need? I have an appt with an attorney but it's not for another month or so and I'd like to understand the process myself before the meeting. Should we have a trust? Our kids are 6 and 9. We don't have a high income (around $100k), but we also have low expenses so our networth seems to grow each year. About $700k of that $2m is equity in the house and another large chunk is retirement or college savings.
