Please list DC High Schools

A friend of mine is new to the area, & is looking to get her son into a high school. I have a preschooler, so my search hasn't expanded that far yet, & I don't know all that are in the area. Also, what's the likelihood of entering in the school mid-year? Thanks.

Public? What neighborhood? Wilson High School is probably the best bet. Have her check out the academic academies for college-bound students. FYI: It's closing for renovations next year. Students will attend class at other schools, TBD.

Private? Post in the private school forum.

Thanks to the above posts. I will check them out.

Can anyone speak to:

Duke Ellington (Son has an interest in acting)
School Without Walls
McKinley Tech

They all sound good, but I don't know for sure.

Your friend will really need to contact DCPS about mid-year enrollment.

Try Bell Multicultural at Columbia Heights. AMAZING brand new theatre and facilities! http://www.checdc.org/index.html

3 schools you listed are competitive city-wide schools. Elington requires an audition. School Without Walls requires an entrance exam and interview. Banneker is better than McKinley academically but toughter to get in.

Might try public charter school Wm Doar. Performing arts focused. http://www.wedjschool.us

I don't know anything about McKinley Tech, but School Walls, Banneker, Duke Ellington, and Wilson are supposed to be OK.

You should also check schools' college placement to get a sense of how college prep the school is.

SWW is college prep. I don't think it has mid-year admissions. Have your friend email or call.

Duke Ellington is for children who excel in the arts, who've shown a talent and passion for it. Many begin with considerable experience in music, drawing, acting, movement. A child who is only marginally or theoretically interested in the arts might be intimidated. It's not quite Fame, but your friend should research this. Many students go to college, not sure the percentage or what kinds of schools. I'm betting a few end up at Juillard.

Banneker is a rigorous IB college prep program.
