how to address stim/tic of repeating words?

Anonymous
Any advice? 6 year old boy. Bathroom/potty words, unfortunately. He says them randomly or over and over at certain points of the day. Tough to address because it serves many purposes for him - he is a huge attention seeker, so he gets that, he loves doing something shocking, and it also a stim/tic. He ill stop for a moment or two when asked and then goes right back to it.

See a child psychiatrist or developmental pediatrician. It could be Tourette's syndrome.

We’ve done both and have an adhd diagnosis for now. Full neuropsych is forthcoming. More likely to be asd. Regardless, we have to address the issue.

It's a difficult thing for them to control. Behavior therapy can help. I had a little success just giving short term rewards if my kid could suppress unwanted behaviors for a set time period. But it seems like maturity helped more than anything else.

You'll have to ignore it either way.

Figuring out whether it's a stim or a tic, two totally different things, should be your first step. What does the doctor say?
