I am just beginning my Kindergarten school search for my 4 year old- he is currently in a mainstream preschool. Will start K in 2019-2020. His expressive/receptive speech are fine. His issue is articulation. He is difficult to understand.
It is having some social and behavioral repurcussions as of late in his classroom. He is having trouble engaging his peers IN LARGE GROUPS. He is in speech therapy and otherwise seems to be average academically. I think a small class size is crucial for him. His home school is Kensington Parkwood. I'm considering Harbor, Norwood, Concord Hill, Jewish Day School. I have visited Maddux and do not feel it is the right fit for him. Any other suggestions or ideas??? |
| Visit McLean School, or a Parish Catholic school |
| Speech shouldn't be a barrier to any school. |
Clearly you don't have a child with a language disorder. Its very much a barrier. Kids are tested in public for reading partly with the ability to answer questions verbally and read outloud. Kids get held back in reading groups, or mind did despite high non-verbal test scores as they claimed he couldn't read as well due to articulation (one had nothing to do with the other but school did not care). |
I think that poster means you shouldn't worry overly much. Obviously, if you have the money, you can opt for private. However, all public schools are mandated to address speech issues. You child will catch up quickly and teacher will work with him. Being held back in a reading group isn't forever. Kids catch up when their speech improves. |
| You have a great list so far. Consider adding Green Acres. Classes are very small and the teachers really work hard to respond to the unique needs of each child in the class. |

OP Here.
Green acres is a great idea too. I considered it for camp this year but chose elsewhere. I am curious to hear from others who had kids there with speech issues. BTW he has an IEP for speech. bullis??? primary day?? or are those too cut-throat academically? |
I would not even consider sending a child with an IEP to Bullis or Primary Day for K but YMMV. Have you had an educational test/IQ test? You need one for those schools. |
These are fine schools but will do nothing to address op's issue. Maddux is the best bet. |
| Another vote for maddux |
They may be mandated to address speech issues, but its very hard to get them to do anything and you re much better off in private. Speech therapy in public school is terrible and child may not catch up quickly if the issue is severe. It is bad for a child to be held back in reading as they don't progress if not encouraged. My child went stagnant in reading because of it and is really bored. |
Bullis won't want him if he qualifies for an IEP. Just as an FYI, op, your kid is having behavioral and social problems now. Even if your kid makes it through the play date and gets accepted to any of these schools doesn't mean he won't be counseled out later. I would look at McLean or maddux. |
| Just out of curiosity, Op, has your kid been evaluated by an SLP who is independent of Infant & Toddlers/PEP. Your description of his issues sounds more like it's barely scratching the surface and based solely on what his IEP label would be. Don't count on MCPS to look to deeply. Get a private speech evaluation if you haven't already done so. |
Don’t listen to this. I know 3 kids who had IEPs with MCPS and were accepted at Bullis. All were happy. |
OP's kid doesn't have a language disorder. Only speech. |
