Where do you store your lawn mower? Are we crazy to store it in the basement?

Please advise. We’ve stored it there for 10 years- with gas in the tank - and haven’t had any problems, but now I’m starting to worry that there’s a fire risk. Unfortunately we don’t have a shed or garage.

Can you put in a cheap shed? I wouldn’t store it in the house.

You are perfectly okay but if it really worries you, you can store outside and cover it up with something. Not as good as indoor (due to humidity/rain) but it's okay if you keep it covered

We keep ours outside, uncovered. I know, I know, bad. We do store lighter fluid for the grill in the basement, though - I
Don’t see how that is any better than your mower.

If I'm supposed to be storing my mower in a low humidity environment I'm f-cked.

I would drain the gas out because otherwise it might smell like gas in your basement which is nauseating and a fire risk.

I've stored mower in (detached) garage for years. I have never had a fire and I've never smelled gas from it. I don't see how that would be different in a basement. Plus, your basement (hopefully) has smoke alarms that would alert you to any flames quickly. Just don't store it right next to the furnace/boiler, where it's conceivable that could ignite any fumes (seems highly unlikely and would mean a malfunctioning furnace).

FWIW, gasoline while flammable isn't something that spontaneously ignites easily. That's why cars don't start blowing up when it gets hot out, and require engines with massive amounts of cylinder pressure and a spark to get ignition.

WE store ours in our attached garage. Our neighbors do in their basement garage (opens to back yard but is under the house). How are either of these 2 instances different than you?
