| I run 2 1/4 miles with effort but without stopping. I would like to do a 5k. Any recommendations as to how to get there? Also, do people in races like that wear ipods? I always run with it, but I don't think I've seen people in races do it. TIA. |

You could probably do a 5k now. The adrenaline would get you through the last (about) 3/4 of a mile. Go for it!
And some races allow ipods, some don't. |
| How about running for x minutes, then walking for y minutes and gradually increasing the run time while decreasing the walk time? I think in a lot of races, headphones are not allowed for safety reasons but people still wear them. |

People still wear iPods but you are usu not supposed to do so.
As for a 5K, you can find / google 5k training plan and you'll be able to find one (I think runner's world has one). It will be a combo of run/walk. Be sure to do some strength training and allow recovery periods for your body to adjust and heal. At some point, you'll have to start pushing through the "wall". WHen it gets hard I think to myself that "it is supposed to be hard". It is a challenge. As long as you're not in pain, carry on! You'll do great. Pretty soon, you'll be into 10ks and more. You'll be surpirsed. |
Most races technically do not allow ipods, but it's not a concern unless you're trying to win something. They won't kick you out of the race, but you could be disqualified from winning. I've never had to worry about that
As for getting up to 5k, I agree with PP that you could probably do it now. Go for the whole distance, even if you have to walk some, to get your body used to the distance. Then increase the amount of time you are running until you don't need to walk any more. You should be very proud of your self!! |
| I'm a horrible runner and managed to do a couple of 5ks. One option is to slow your pace slightly. but definitely keep in mind you can slow down and walk for a bit to catch your breath. Good luck, you definitely should be proud! |

As stated, most races do not allow headphones for two reasons. One, it's a safety/liability thing -- if you're in your own world, you might not hear other runners, ambulances, etc... Second, it is an advantage. So, you may not be trying to "win", but if I'm in the same category as you and you have an advantage (i.e. music makes running easier and less painful) then you will unfairly perform better than me....and maybe I do care where I come in overall in the standings. It's against the rules. 3.1 miles isn't far. Race without it. |

Have to agree with the pp on the fact that 3.1 miles isn't far and you should run without it. I'm an advocate for it in a longer race (personally I use it for 10 miles and above) but some of the fun part of doing a 5k is taking in the scenery/atmosphere and you'll miss that with headphones on.
I also agree you could do it now. And to train just adding in intervals of walking and running on top of your current running, gradually shortening the walking intervals will get you there pretty quickly. |
| i think it depends on how much you like taking in the scenary and can entertain yourself in your head. some days i'm good to go, but other days i'm sooo bored after 10 minutes. a race is a bit different though. you have more to think about. |
| OP here- thanks so much! I did it- last night I ran 3 miles. Now I just need to do it without the Ipod and I'll be set. I also, for the first time, hit a groove where I could have kept going a bit more. maybe after 2.5 miles? |

You know, OP, I find that I really don't hit my running groove until about mile 1.5-2.0.
That first 1.5 miles or so is getting the kinks out and blood moving. I think a lot of folks feel that way. Many people think about many different things while they run . . . you'll find your focus zone in time. But, you have to ditch the iPod (at least some of the time) to find it. |
| Ditch the iPod during the race. I always listen to music while running, but during a race you need to pay more attention to the course, which may be unfamiliar. Plus, there is usually a crowd to deal with. Running with the crowd will provide plenty of motivation during the race. Go for it! |

couch to 5K is a great program.
try running without ipod....it is kinda nice. |
