Before school access to wifi

Anonymous
I have a 12.5 and a 10 year old.

They love wifi and want to be online as much as possible. I have limits and a device that limits access during off hours/night, etc. They only have access a couple days a week in the evenings and weekend use. They only use it on computers, iPads, and the PlayStation. No cell phones here yet.

My older kid now wants to use it in the morning before school to watch videos or chat with friends online. I would not allow gaming as it is too easy to get involved and they are bad about stopping.

If I do this, I would want to have so,e ground rules and wondering what others have had.

I have
Must be up, dressed, and ready for school
Must have taken dog for decent walk (not just in front yard)
No PS/4 or other gaming
Must turn off at request
No access on mornings of tests or if he/projects not finished
Must be in bed by 9:00, with no screens
No more than XX minutes

He is asking to use before breakfast. He leaves for school at 8am and wakes at 7am.

Anything else?

He has to leave the house nicely when it's time -- that would be my #1. Fine for the time, but when you say it's time to go, his response should be "great - I'll turn off my ipad". Another other response and I would be done with this in the morning.

So, the other thing you need to know is that your kids will soon or have already figured out how to hack that device that turns off the wifi. They will soon be 12 steps ahead of you, so what you really need to do is teach them good routines and habits and have consequences for missing deadlines and being late. They will always find a way to have access.

My 10-year-old laughs at those xfinity commercials where "mom controls it all" from her phone. Ha!

I'd just say no. That is a LOT of rules. Those other kids he wants to text are busy getting ready for school too you know. I'm sure their parents won't be thrilled with them begging to go online to respond to your kid.
