Troubling. Saw an interview with police chief and mayor. Mostly deflection and focus on other crime rates being down from last year. |
| And Mayor Marion Barry-Bowser is running unopposed?!. DC’s surging murder rate is another stark example of slippage while she has been mayor. |
| DC will always be DC. |
Yes. You can slap some lipstick on certain parts and call it trendy, but progress is slow. - former Columbia Heights resident happily living in another NW neighborhood |
I worked there and would never live there . Saw too much crime.
|
| How much is youth recidivist crime and when will the excellent Post expose on revolving youth justice in DC get an adequate response from the politicians and justice system? We are going on two years. Where are we with this?? |
Yet she is a woman and is black. She will be reekected even at the expense of these victims. Some things never change in dc. |
They don't care as long as the dead remain east of the river. It's a damn shame he's the chief of police and she is running unopposed for mayor. Sheesh. |
Don't know what race and her gender has to do with anything, but since you went there, the Chief of Police is a white man. Murders and crime increased on his watch. How does that fit into your narrative. |

| Racine may be our only hope. |
Oh yeah, the guy to fix crime is Karl Racine. Just look at where his “prosecution” strategies have gotten us. |

Unacceptable spike in violence’: DC officials want illegal guns off city streets
He said that along with focusing on pulling illegal firearms off the streets, the city needs to re-examine the penalties for carrying illegal weapons. “I also think we need to take a strong look at what the consequences are for carrying an illegal firearm and make sure those penalties are significant enough where we’re having an impact,” he said. The minimum sentence in D.C. for a felon with a firearm is a year in prison. It is two years for other unlawful forms of firearm possession. https://www.google.com/amp/s/wtop.com/dc/2018/05/dcs-police-chief-on-whats-different-about-the-recent-spate-of-violence/amp/ Guns are illegal yet kill people in DC. Why do libs think banning guns will equal less crime? |
Duh. Because guns are a dangerous product, and any measure that restricts their manufacturing and distribution in the US will decrease their availability to criminals as well. The illegal guns were likely purchased legally in Virginia. Stamp that out in Virginia, and DC won't have illegal guns on the street. |
1. How much of this spike is due to changes in weather patterns? 2. Assuming there is a 50% spike for the whole year, isn't that still well below homicide rates in the 1990's? 3 If the homicide rate is spiking, but not for other crimes, does that not suggest something more complex than DC always being DC? |
