FCPS advanced diploma - arts requirement?

Anonymous
We are new to FCPS next fall. I’m trying to understand the advanced diploma requirements. It says that one class in arts or career/technical education is required. My ds has zero interest in any of the arts. What fulfills this requirement ?

Still time to ask the school counselor. Sorry, I don't know.

I'm not in VA but my kids do have to take one class in the arts which is basically Art or Music.

Then he can take a class in career/technical education.

My DS had zero interest in math. Sometimes you have to study things that aren't of interest to you.

Check your high school’s website for career and tech ed courses or many kids take photography cor their arts elective.

Yes, but singing/dancing/painting/acting is quite different than math.

There are many electives to satisfy this requirement. What school would your DS be attending?

My DD has requested Digital Arts -- which is under Technical Ed. That would probably work.

What’s going to be the real pain in the butt is the new sequential electives requirement starting with incoming freshman. Gone are the days of taking photography 1, then ceramics 1, then film study 1, and having a chance to see what’s out there. You need a sequence of at least 2 elective classes.

That has been the requirement for the standard diploma for a while. Since my DC did not take foreign language, he was not eligible for the advanced diploma, and he had to do it. He found a computer technology sequence that worked.

The very first link returned on a simple Google search for "FCPS graduation requirements" https://www.fcps.edu/academics/graduation-requirements-and-course-planning

Scroll down and you'll find links to the requirements for your kid's class. Reach out to your students Advisor/Counselor to discuss what courses you're kid would like to take next year.
