| Two adults, one tween. We’d like to walk or use public transportation mostly and Uber sparingly. What hotel or neighborhood is our best option as a home base? Thanks! |
| Decatur |
| Isn’t that like staying in Rockville to be a tourist in DC? |
Near the Arts Center MARTA station would be a good spot- some nice restaurants and museums there, not as boring as downtown. But 5 minute ride to downtown, or 8 out to Buckhead. You can get the MARTA Smartrip-typd card and put a 2 day pass on it for $14, and/or one day pass for $9. Coworker has stayed at the Artmore Hotel there and liked it. Also a Residence Inn and a Marriott Suites within a few blocks. Check out the Ponce City Market for great meals. Like Union Market in DC but more vendors. |
| I usually stay at the W downtown great pool for an evening swim. My othe recommendation would be any place that makes it easier to get out of town. |
You’re headed to the WRONG city. It will be blazing hot and it’s hard to reach many places by public transportation. Normal people don’t take the bus in Atlanta. |
Ha! I'm from Atlanta and is not a walkable friendly city! Best bet is midtown as one poster put in. Decatur is not like Rockville as Decatur is very charming and has great restaurants and a cute downtown. And there is a Metro station so you could Metro in to Aquarium, Centennial Park, World of Coke, etc. It's not a very good tourist town in my book. Every time we go we have to look hard to find things to do. |
Our trip is not this summer so I doubt it will be blazing hot. We used the metro system and walked last trip seven years ago. |
We have to be in Atlanta to look at schools so it is the city we’re headed to. Thanks for the recommendations. |
I think you meant "people with money to afford a car" don't take the bus. Plenty of "normal people" who ride the bus in every city. |
what a gross, classist, and - reading between the lines - racist comment. |
It’s actually more of a reflection on how so many Atlanta residents are vehemently opposed to public transportation. Average professionals don’t take the city bus. |

Native Atlantan here. A lot of us don't use public transportation simply because it's not convenient and is very limited and doesn't tend to get us where we need to go. So we suffer with these horrible soul sucking commutes everywhere, even on weekends just to see friends and go places.
OP, I don't know where these schools you're going to see are located, but chances are you'll want a rental car so you can check them out without paying $$$ for Ubers during your trip. I like the Buckhead area for out-of-town era. It has great shopping, plenty of restaurants, nice hotels, very walkable, fairly safe, and a Marta station. You can easily get to other places you'll probably want to go from there. |
One school is in Buckhead. The schools are not for the child accompanying us. Only one adult needs to go to the schools. We’d need to rent two cars to avoid walking or Uber. |
| JW Marriot in Buckhead. |
