12 hours in Madrid airport

Enough time to leave and go do something?

The Metro is only 20 minutes into the center of the city, and you can buy an unlimited 1 day pass for €8.40:

Considering a one way ticket to the airport is €5, it pays for itself with just the roundtrip to/from the airport.

Then you have probably 8 hours to wander around and maybe go to one interesting neighborhood.

OP- something to consider. Trying to choose between bad mileage reservations that include 1 long layover in Madrid or 1 extra flight and 2 three hour layovers in England.

Is this using American miles? They don't charge change fees as long as you don't change the origin and destination. So you could book whichever one you like best for now, and then if/when better flights open up, you can call and change your flights for free. What is your route?

Between those two options I would take the long layover in Madrid if the total travel time is about the same. Nice to break it up a bit and amble around and sit at cafes for a day.

To be clear, the American Airlines no change fee policy is only for award reservations, not for normal cash flights. And whatever you change it to has to be available at the low "Saaver" level.

Yes, its AA. One option is PHL-MAD-TLV with 12 hrs in MAD. The other is PHL-MAN-LHR-TLV with 3 hrs in MAN and LHR each. They both arrive in TLV around 11:30pm.

Yes it's saver level travel. I understand the rules.

What did you do? Just walk around and have a meal? Prado?

I would definitely do Madrid. Prada and a great meal is time well spent. Though if you are going to tlv you might not enjoy the suckling pig and wonderful jamon...

*1. I’d do Madrid too! Otherwise you’ll just be stuck in UK airports.

I love Madrid. I’d skip the Prado with just one day. Head to city center and just visit the plazas. Eat the amazing food!
