Beauvoir

Is it worth it to apply to Beauvoir if I have no intention of sending my son to St. Albans?

It's a great school but very hard to get into so try that plus some other options. If your son tests and interviews really well he'll be set for life.

Yes. It is a wonderful school.

Our son goes to Beauvoir and we never imagined he might go to St. Albans (never been big on single-sex schools). But he loves Beauvoir so much that we may be rethinking this in a few years. He is just so happy.

Seriously. I was cracking up at that comment, too!

I guess if he has an off day or doesn't test well that means that he's screwed for the rest of his life?

Most of the kids do go on to the two Cathedral schools. If your DC is at the top of the class in 3rd grade, he or she has a good shot at getting into Sidwell or GDS. Not such a good shot if the child is in the middle. Maret is less academically challenging than the other two, but still hard to get into because the number of openings are always small. So you should know that your child's "easiest" option in 4th grade may be the Cathedral schools - preference, more openings, etc.

Beauvoir is also not terribly difficult to get into if you've been to the "right" preschool. If your DC goes to NCRC, its fairly easy to get in. The preK class is literally filled with NCRC children. People do get rejected but unless there is a behavior problem or the parents seem clearly odd or difficult to deal with. Even the latter isn't a big issue if you are wealthy. I think the other big feeder is Little Folks. If your child is young, target these preschools. NCRC isn't hard if there is any diversity you can highlight or if you target the 3rd (preK) year. Even the 2nd year isn't as tough to get into since most people already have their child in some preschool by then and don't want to move.

Is 4th grade an expansion year at Sidwell and Maret? I didn't think it was for Sidwell.

Last time I looked into this, Sidwell expanded at 3rd but not 4th. A few kids do leave Beauvoir after 2nd for Sidwell.

Of 80 Beauvoir graduates in 2006:
31 either went to or were accepted at (sorry don't have the details anymore) NCS
7 at GDS
4 at Maret
4 at St Patrick's
0 at Sidwell

The figures are from a Beauvoir presentation that someone here linked to in 2008; however, the link is now broken.

what about the remaining 34 students?

Probably a whole bunch went to STA, and a few went to other schools. I don't have the data anymore, and I don't have boys, so I didn't look at those numbers.

Is K harder to get into than pre-K?
