| We are about to adopt a 9 month old puppy from a family who is leaving the area (due to sad and unavoidable circumstances). I don't love the dog's name but... is it wrong to rename the dog? Both our family and the dog's current family has young children. |
| If the current family will never see the dog again, I don’t think it’s wrong. It isn’t wrong even if the current family will be around but perhaps it’s insensitive. |
| Rename the dog! I've renamed every dog I've gotten. One was renamed at 3 even. His name was "Slick" and he was a Yorkie so I really felt the name did not fit him (Yorkies are fluffy, not slick?!). Several months after renaming him I tried to call him by his old name and he didn't even remember it. |
| It doesn't matter. Name it what you want. |
Actually, Slick for a yorkie is pretty funny. |

How nice to have such small problems. I would rename the dog without second thoughts. |

It's the PETS forum for pete's sake. |
| We renamed both of our dogs when we got them as puppies. Not a big deal. |
| I've done this with two different dogs I gotten. Dogs do just fine with name changes but I agree it might be weird if the dog will still have visits from the original family. |
Yes, and pets become ill, die or hurt people or other animals. Renaming a dog shouldn't cause this much angst. |
| I used to foster for a rescue and we always encouraged adopters to go ahead and rename the dogs. It can be a pretty important part of making the dog feel "yours". The dogs don't care one bit. |
Really? The OP posed a question. A simple question that she didn't know the answer to. She got answers. She might even come back and say "thanks". No sense she is angst-ridden. Perhaps you need to do something to become less judgmental before you choke on the bile. |
| Not at all! Dogs don't think that way. |
| We've renamed our 2 rescue dogs -- no issues. Like another poster said, they stopped even knowing their old names. |
