Advice for new Kindergartner - Soccer

Anonymous
Hi,

My son enjoys playing soccer, but he needs some real coaching and game experience.

He's 5 now, entering K in the fall (Nov birthday).

We're debating between Potomac, MSI or PPA.

Anyone with experience with this age group? Is the Potomac premium worth it at this stage, or would it be better to get experience with another program and then try and join Potomac when he's older?

Thanks for any comments.

No to Potomac. I would not spend that kind of money for a K playing soccer. There are afterschool programs run by Brit Am that are more affordable and held at local schools. My kids enjoyed the K MSI program but my guess is that’s not what you’re looking for.

I would wait until 2nd grade at minimum for Potomac. About half the travel kids at U9 seemed to have come from rec so there’s no harm in waiting.

It is really silly to worry about a Kindergartners soccer experience - and I have a Kindergartner who happens to be very good at soccer.

Very few kids can do much more than basic drills and few kids can do those drills for more than a few minutes.

And the games are the same - you are lucky if too many kids stay engaged for even a portion of the game and much of the play is organizationally a mess. Coaches spend more time pointing kids towards the right goal than developing skills.

Find a team that your kid can be on with their friends so they will have fun - no need to overthink this. You can worry about the coaching and competition later but soccer is fairly intuitive so if your kid likes it and is good at it he will develop just by being out on the field.
