Can you go "out of bounds" in fairfax county?

Does anyone know if there is a way to go to a different elementary school than your districted one? The one my that my DS would attend has terrible test scores and I've not heard anything good about the principal. There is another elementary school less than a mile from our house that families rave about. Is there any way I can have my son attend that school?

Foreign language immersion. 3rd grade GT. Go to the FCPS website for daycare stuff and forms.

(1) If you or your spouse teaches in FCPS, you can apply to have a transfer
(2) If your child qualified for GT services (not until 3rd grade) - they could be sent to the local GT Center
(3) You can apply for your child to attend one of two magnet schools: Hunters Woods and Bailey's Elementary schools are Arts and Sciences magnet schools

There may be other ways - maybe someone else can tell you. I don't think you can select whatever school you want to go to in the county, but there may be ways to get around that rule that I'm not aware of.

You can also petition to go to one of the partial immersion schools, but your chances of admission are extremely small:

http://www.fcps.edu/DIS/OHSICS/forlang/partial.htm

You are reponsible for transportation.

Also, this is definitely not the way you want to go, but if your child has severe behavioral problems, you can get an IEP to specify that they need to be placed in special ed program for kids with behavioral challenges. The two elementary schools that I know of with such centers are Olde Creek and Terra Center (I think there are others, too).

You can also petition to move to certain schools that are not overcrowded if they offer a program not offered at your local school. For example, if your local high school offers only IB and your child wants AP classes, you can petition to have your child attend the school offering AP classes. You can also claim a childcare hardship for elementary school:

The chances of your being able to move your child to an out-of-bounds school are very slim, but these are the methods I know of.

Here's the list of schools closed to transfers this year:

Generally, closed schools are those that are at or over capacity.

A neighbor moved her children because she wanted a better art program for one of them. This was from one elementary to another, and it wasn't for G&T or anything. Once the older one was old enough to go to Middle School/Jr. High/Whatever, she moved the younger child back to the neighborhood school.

I wouldn't get too hung up on test scores. "Low" is a relative term in Fairfax County which is nationally recognized as an excellent system. Educational opportunities abound in every Fairfax County school. Also, remember that if you do go to an out of district school, the bus won't pick your kid up. You'll be dropping off/picking up every single day or paying a center to do it. Are you sure you want to commit to that without even having given your district school a chance?

My neighbors moved in Sept. of LAST year right at the start of the school year, and kept their DD at their old (though still nearby) school for the balance of that school year. (She was only in first grade LAST year so it's not like she had been there ages and was finishing up...)

THis year, their DD is in 2d grade and is still at the old school and now her younger sibling has started K at that old school. They (the parents) say they are going to switch them to our neighborhood school NEXT school year. Weird, since I would have thought the transition to a new school (since they are adament that they are going to eventually switch them to our neighborhood school) would be easier on the kids the sooner it is done.

Still not sure how they are doing it with regard to policies, etc.

If the language immersion does not get cut, that is the easiest way to do it. Fox Mill has a Japanese partial immersion (the kids spend half their day learning math and scoence in Japanese). They have never had to turn anyone away from the program. Starts in 1st grade.

For the person that posted about their neighbor keeping their kids at the original school (even though they moved in September)...

Would be interested to know how they did this, since we're in the same boat (moving from one FCPS ES to another and want to keep them in the original ES through the end of the year...)

Sorry, I have no idea how they went about this... since we moved into the neighborhood after they moved in. I wrote the above based on what they told me. Of course, the dad also admitted to me (in a different conversation) that he plays fast and loose with rules.... so I'm not sure they are doing it "above board" or are just doing it.

There is NO way you can must move your kids to a different elementary school because you like the art program. Your neighbor may have told you this was the reason the kids went out of bounds, but there had to have been some other justification (e.g., maybe they liked the other school better so they got the kids into a childcare near that school and then applied for transfer).
