| I have never used a babysitter before. I just found one that I like and will be hiring her for occassional babysitting. How much tip should I give her (if any) on top of her hourly rate? |
|
None....At least I dont expect tips..and if was offered I would refuse. If you are late, pay the extra... I don't like to give tips left and right and actually don't appreciate at all that some people do expect them - e.g cab drivers, waiters, etc....
Really, a tip should be offered if the person went above and beyond their duties....otherwise, the price of the cab fare, the price of the meal/drinks at a restaurant, the hourly rate of the sitter, etc...is enough. |
| I do not agree with PP. I always tip babysitters, if they do a good job and do not overcharge to begin with. I tip at about 10%. |
| In all my years of babysitting as a teenager and young adult, I was never tipped. And, in my few years of hiring a babysitter I've never tipped either. The whole idea is really weird to me. I usually pay a fair rate depending on the age/experience of the babysitter, and I also make sure they have some good food (maybe I order something for them). I really think that's all that is necessary. |
| Why would getting a tip be weird? Sorry but I always tip and so did my parents. |
|
I use the same babysitter and always simply pay by the hour (calculated at 15 minute intervals). I have never tipped, and I never would. I pay $15 an hour, and I think that's sufficient, but also, if you tip once, they are going to expect a tip all the time, and I think it's just easier if you include the tip as part of the hourly rate.

| I babysit for many families and a tip is always appreciated. Actually, if you don't tip I may not be available the next time you call. I always make myself available to the families that tip or at least round up. |
|
I always round up, giving her an extra 5-10 dollars.

I think you should reconsider your views on waiters since they make about 2 dollars an hour. THey rely on tips to make a living. |
| yeah, i always round up but i don't tip. i remember getting tips when i babysit and was getting $2/hour. somehow i think paying $15/hour is sufficient. |
Can I ask how much you're paid an hour? I can't imagine my babysitter having this attitude (but that might be because I pay $15 an hour). |
|
I too babysat as a teenager and we've used a sitter several times now - the thought had NEVER occurred to me to tip her. we pay her rate and round up to the nearest $5 level, but I don't see why she would need tipped.
I also think that $15 an hour for a babysitter (not a nanny) seems a lot unless it's several kids. But maybe that's just my neighborhood... |
