Over the last few days our 6 month olds urine smells very strong. He does not seem to have any other symptoms – no fever, etc. He is having regular wet diapers. The two obvious problems that come to mind are a UTI or dehydration but neither seem to really fit.
I am waiting to get into the pediatrician. In the meantime, any thoughts or experience with this? Thank you! |
Has DC just started solids? That might affect the smell. |
My daughter's urine also smelled strong and was noticeably worse after starting solids. Ped wasn't concerned but he did a urine test and it was normal. It is possible my sense of smell for that type of thing was strong because now, at 2 years old, it doesn't bother me as much. |
OP Here - No solids yet. Still exclusively on breastmilk. Thanks for your thoughts. |
Have you switched diaper brands recently? I find that with Pampers, which are scented with a baby powder scent, I don't smell the urine smell but with some other brands like Huggies, the urine smell is more noticeable. |
Could DC be slightly dehydrated? Does the urine in the diaper appear to be a darker yellow than normal?
If so, have you introduced water yet? Try introducing a little water and see if that changes the smell. My DC was 6 months old during the summer months so we used to give him a little water via a straw (put the straw in water, put finger on top of straw to retain water, and then introduce a few drops into DC's mouth.) |
