I know the DCPCS Board just celebrated 20 years in DC. Their website said 3 PCS were opened in 1997. What schools were they. |
I know Cap City is oldest parent-founded charter (1999).

Hyde which is Perry Street Prep? |
E.W. Stokes? |
1998 |
IDEA PCS in Deanwood was founded in 1997 I believe. |
I believe Friendship (Chamberlain and maybe another) was among the first charters to open. |
I believe that Next Step is the only one of the original (1996) DC charter schools to remain open. Options, Marcus Garvey, and Children's Studio were also launched in 1996 but have closed. Community Academy and XCellerations opened in 1997 but have also closed. Notably, these schools were all launched by the Board of Ed rather than by the PCSB.
Educating kids is a tough business that requires more than just a soft heart and a good concept. The failure rate among charter schools is high: http://www.dcpcsb.org/report/charter-school-growth-closures |
