| I assume I missed a thread somewhere? This makes me so nervous about ever giving my kid a phone. They do such stupid stuff even when you explain potential consequences. |
| OP here. I am going to assume there isn't already a thread? it involves students from George Mason high too. Kids are such idiots some time and it so scary they could get in trouble for posession of child porn. I wish parents and schools did more to educate kids about this stuff. We talk to our kids, but at our FCPS they get internet access at school without enough warnings. They need to know how much trouble they can get themselves into putting anything online. I feel for the families and kids because they were likely just impulsive. Heck i went to an ivy league college and there was a freshman streak through the quad each year. Videotape that and distribute and if any of those freshman were 17 instead of 18, big problems. |
| There shouldn’t be phones in middle school at all. Too many parents can’t be untethered for a few hours. |
| cant read the article. |
| It is not being discussed on DCUM because typically anything that happens in Falls Church City is not big news here. FCC residents prefer to chat among themselves rather than air their dirty laundry on DCUM, apparently. |
Totally agree--FCC resident here and believe me this is the first I am hearing about this---so not only can you not get any info on DCUM, you really do not get much info from the school website and the "moms" are mum. We are looking to move out. |
| Is there such a thing as a flip phone WITHOUT a camera and no ability to text? If so, when the time comes that is what I am getting my kid. |
Maybe you just need to hang out with more talkative people? The emails from the MS and HS principals went out mid-day Friday. Since then, I’ve heard it thoroughly discussed at pickup at TJ, at weekend sports events, at the pool, on various neighborhood and community FB groups, and just in passing with neighbors. The local news even set up in the Giant parking lot, soliciting interviews. I guarantee no one’s trying to hide anything. |
| Talk to your kids (I started in 5th grade--and just keep talking about it. Laying out the consequences. Hope it gets through their hormone addled minds. It isn't just the sending, it is the receiving, and that they need to come to me if a pic is sent (I have promised to not freak out or even tell anyone), we just need to get it off the phone. |
| Wow - how is it a greatschools 8? |
| Don't kid yourself that this isn't happening at other area public and private schools, regardless of the school ranking. |
That's exactly what I am talking about. It is being discussed thoroughly at Giant, at TJ, etc, and the news stations are covering it, gradually all of them. But...on DCUM...crickets. Typical. FCC is a closed society. |
?? Because those scores are based on standardized tests, not prevalence of sexting. Because wealthy kids who score well on tests can still send dirty pictures. |
Most of those in-person discussions i referenced above were about how we as parents can talk to our kids, educate them about the dangers of doing something this stupid\hurtful, work with the schools on technology issues, etc. Basically, how to make this a constructive learning experience. DCUM immediately went to the effect on FCCPS' Great Schools ranking. It's not that residents are closing ranks. It's that our priorities are different. |
