What MCPS considers to be none of your business

NEW: Richard Montgomery HS student (pictured) allegedly robbed, beat fellow classmate at gunpoint.

Happened in February along walking path, directly adjacent to the school.

MCPS says it didn't report the violent crime since it occurred off-property + after normal school hours.

YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF WHAT MCPS COVERS UP (OR HOPES PARENTS WON'T FIND OUT ABOUT) - A student robs and beats another student AT GUNPOINT, right next to the school and MCPS says it didn't report because it happened right next to the school. RIGHT.

Didn’t report it to whom?

Why would MCPS report this?

Seriously?

Because a student robbed another student next to the school. Why not?

Sounds like the police took care of the matter without MCPSs help.

Sounds like a police matter if it wasn't on school property. I am sure many students in MCPS have been nvolved with police happenings when they aren't at school. I doubt we'd hear about all of them....

Report it where? To the police or as part of MCPS crime stats?

If it happened off campus, then no, they shouldn't report it in the mcps crime stats because it happened off campus, even if it was close. If a child is abused outside of school grounds, the school doesn't report it as part of its crime stats.

Did the victim report it to the police?

it also happened outside of school hours, so why would mcps report it? OP, MCPS is not the community police 24/7.

That path is definitely to be avoided. My kids know to stay off it.

It would make sense to define a broader area surrounding the school that would be included in the crime stats.

Universities that are located in urban environments have started sending crime alerts for areas that are not University property but are within a defined geofence area adjacent to the school where students are known to travel frequently. If your focus is on student safety and being a good community partner, this is the right thing to do.

If there were a man trying to abduct female students adjacent to the school would you think it appropriate to notify parents? A lot of the students use that path so it would figure that they would want to inform the school community about things happening there.

it happened after hours. Again, mcps is not the community police 24/7.

Did someone from MCPS see the crime happening and not report it? Did the victim not report it?

I'm not suggesting that MCPS should have been patrolling the area. I am agreeing with the OP that a violent incident where the attacker and victim were both students and the incident occurred adjacent to the school should have resulted in an email to the school list serv.

I think it depends. Child abduction is an issue that even the police notifies the community about, no matter where it happens - close to school or not. A student being beaten and robbed by another student is not a community PSA even by police standards.

If the assailant was a stranger to the school, then I would think the school would notify parents. But, if it's an MCPS student who goes to that school, and this happened off campus, off hours, then no, I don't think it's appropriate for the school to tell parents to watch out for that kid. I presume that the victim called the police and the school was made aware of the offendor's actions that were committed outside of school. Hopefully, they will keep an eye on that kid.
