| I moved from VA to maine. Is there a benefit in returning my va ezpass and getting a maine one? Va doesn't charge a monthly fee or make you do auto replenishments so I actually got a va one when I lived in md. Just wondered do you get a break on the tolls of the state where you have it? Didn't matter much when I lived in va or md but now I'm using brand new tools. Maybe this is very state specific? |
| No, I think keeping the VA one is probably fine. I traveled with my EZPass through some other states and when I checked my account, I was charged the "EZPass rate" which was lower than the posted cash tolls. |
| No need to change. I moved from NJ to MD and there is no difference in tolls. |
| I moved from MD to IL 3 years ago and haven’t changed. No issues. I did have to update my license plate info with ezpass though. |
| I never update my plate. Same car class, doesn't matter |
Be careful with this. When the EZPass battery dies (and they do eventually), you will not be hit with fines IF your plate is registered with EZPass (because the cameras capture the plates). If your license plate is not up to date, then you will be begging for mercy. |
This surprises me. I got dinged for a Garden State Parkway toll driving my new car with a temporary plate home from the dealership because it was a different plate than the ones on my old car which had gone with the car. I would recommend updating your plate. |
| Thanks DCUM! Keeping the VA pass but I had forgotten to put my new plates on there so doing that now! |
| Yes, do keep the license plate updated with EZPass. We didn't have enough EZ Pass thingies for all the cars (two adults, 4 teen drivers) and it certainly got our attention when we got fined by EZ Pass for having transponders in cars that were not registered on EZ Pass with their own transponder. |
| Just seeing this. I also moved from VA to Maine, and there's a definite advantage to having a Maine EZ Pass. You get breaks on each trip. Saves a lot of money over time. |
It does matter |

separate question... (sorry for hijacking, OP)
I have a transponder that is linked to a car I know longer own, but I keep the transponder for rentals. I just went to delete my old car info thanks to this thread but I can't have "more transponders than vehicles." I don't plan on getting another car anytime soon but would like to keep the transponder, what should I do? |
| Jealous, OP! Enjoy Maine! |
| As others have mentioned, certiant states do give you a break on the tolls if you have that states EZ pass (I know MD and NJ and some roads in NY this applies to). However, your license plate can be different from the EZ pass state (I've had DC plates and a NY EZ pass for almost four years, and have yet to run into an issue) |
|
I know this is an anecdote but I have a NY ezpass. It was linked to my MD tags. I then used it with my new VA tags in VA with no issue whatsoever.
But I took the advice from PPs and made my account current. |
