Would you cancel your Hawaii trip right now?

We're off to Maui in a couple of weeks. I know the volcanic eruption is on another island, but I'm considering vog, earthquakes, tsunami. Would you still go in light of current events?
Anonymous
I'd think you'd be fine on another island. Volcanoes aren't contagious.

You'll be fine. I lived in Hawaii for 13 years. We had eruptions regularly. Depending on where you are and on the weather, you may have to deal with some ash. I probably would avoid the Big Island simply because the airport could be crazy. However, we at KMC when the volcano was really active and it was amazing!

Trade winds blow in the summer most of the time so the vog will blow south/southwest from the volcano which will be away from any other island. I would go.

No. It should be fine.

Maui resident here. This is silliest question I've heard yet! There is NO connection what so ever with this latest eruption and Maui, nothing. This volcano has been doing this off and on for 30 plus years and even any VOG will be taken away by trade winds. I never even felt the 6.9 quake the other day.

We have friends in Honolulu who said they felt the quake. And friends in Kihie who say it's pretty voggy right now. I don't think OP's question is all that crazy.

I bet you ask stupid questions about DC.

Wasn't there also an earthquake in addition to the volcano eruption? That could affect tsunamis.

No! I wouldn't cancel. Lots & lots of people vacationing in Maui now. Have a great time.

Ah yes, the infamous 2-weeks later tsunami.

To be fair the eruption and earthquakes continue.

We are booked for Oahu and the big island in about a month and I’m considering switching big island to Maui. We are booked at the Volcano House right now. I’m not even sure they’re open or if they will be when we are going. I think this is a totally fair question... especially considering flight changes are involved and flights are already selling out for that timeframe.

I would at least consider changing your lodging to the Kona side.
