Private/Public School Timelines

I know that we are a little bit ahead of ourselves, but we are trying to decide what to do with our almost 3 yo next year. We are still torn between public and private and are trying to plan ahead. Our current plan is to apply to 2-3 private schools in the District and also apply to the PK lottery in our local public elementary school.

Does anyone know how the timelines match up? We want to make sure we do not face a situation where we have to make a deposit at a private school before knowing if we got a PK slot at the public school.
