Can I transplant sprouting perennials?

Anonymous
I had to wait for some work on my house to be done before I could tend to the garden. Now my hostas and astilbes and autumn fern are sprouting. Can I move them now or wait until they're done growing and then move? Or, wait until the fall?

You can definitely transplant the hostas. The foliage may suffer a bit if you divide it but it'll be fine.

This. I can't speak for the other plants but they'd probably be okay, too. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to kill a hosta.

Yes. Get as much of the original root ball as you can and water well till reestablished.

Yes you definitely can. I did the same just last week. The leaves looked sad and droopy but I kept watering and they perked up within a week.
