TSA Pre

When do you need to pay to get your children TSA Pre? My husband and I have it and we traveled a lot with our son before he was 2 but not that much between 2 and 3 when he would need his own ticket. Does he need it at this point or do they let minors just go with their parents in the TSA Pre line as opposed to having us go with him in the regular line?

Age 13 they need their own.

This is correct.

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/frequently-asked-questions/i-am-traveling-my-family-can-they-also-use-tsa-precheck-lane

"Children ages 12 and younger may use the TSA Pre lane when traveling with a parent or guardian who has the indicator on their boarding pass. Travelers 13 and older who do not have a TSA Pre boarding pass must go through standard security lanes or apply.

If you want the Global Entry benefits for returning back into the US, you need to get that for all travelers, including infants and children.

True, but they won't do fingerprints for younger kids, which means you don't save a ton of time...

DH and I both have Global Entry and our 15-year-old traveling with us automatically gets TSA Pre.

Right. Domestically my 13 y.o. automatically gets TSA pre. He doesn't need an i.d. to fly and they wouldn't know how old he is anyway.

I mean he gets it when he flies with me since I have it.

NP here.

That has been our experience, too (13 year old still gets it b/c both parents have it). DD just turned 14, so we're getting her own TSA pre check before our summer vacation since we are doing 3 different flights for vacation (one here to place 1, one from place 1 to place 2, and then place 2 back home)... I just don't want to take chances on her not being bumped to TSA-pre since it's only guaranteed through age 12.

I have Pre, but DH doesn’t, and I think whenever we have traveled on the same reservation he has ended up with Pre on his boarding pass, so I don’t know why it would be different for a 13+ year old kid.

I have Global Entry- DD born in US almost always gets Precheck whether she is flying with us or not. dSis younger but born outside the US and almost never gets TSA precehxk.

We had an international flight Friday, I had Pre but DDs (7 and 13) did not. I wondered about the age cutoff and asked first TSA agent, who directed me to take them to the Precheck line with me. That was incorrect, and we got booted from that line when they checked our passports (the TSA agent who redirected us felt bad and sent us through an elite line, so at least it was quick). Only DD13 had to remove shoes and liquids.

It's a courtesy extended by the airline for your DH, but it's not guaranteed. TSA pre website says it's guaranteed for kids through age 12 if they're on your reservation.
