New Federal Data Shows How Black Students Are Getting Pushed Out Of School
At the same time, the Department of Education is considering scrapping the guidance that’s designed to help protect these students. https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/black-students-disabilities-inequality_us_5adf3cf9e4b07be4d4c533c5 |
| Perhaps for similarly classified offenses they are more loud, disruptive and aggressive. We need more, not less discipline, so students who want to learn have a safe learning environment. |
And there we go folks. It only took one reply to get to racist. Gotta day, I’m almost impressed. |

Student safety is my #1 concern. |
You want kids who Have the same offense to get lesser punishments if they are white? |
Then you should want white kuds expelled at the same rate. |
We are at a mixed school. My white kid got in far more trouble than the other kids, who happened to be other races. Made no sense. |
You should want disruptive kids expelled. Why don't you? |
That is not what the study says. The study says that when white kids commit an offense they are less likely to be disciplined, suspended, expelled than a black child or a child with a disabilites who committed the same offense. |
I want white kids, black kids and kids with disabilites to be treated the same. Why don't you? |

There are two parts of this article.
1) Black students are disciplined more than White students because of racial bias. 2) Predominantly Black HS have less access to STEM courses. People can have valid and differing opinions based on data about the discipline issues because both sides are correct. Blacks are punished more often and Blacks also have more incidents of class disruption and indiscipline. So both sides are correct and it is a complex and nuanced issue. We can let this one alone or address it partially with more training and more tracking. The second point is that predominantly Black HS have less access to STEM opportunities, No one can argue that this is unfair and that is something that should be addressed and fixed immediately. |

We have a lot of mass school shootings and they are usually being carried out by White boys. It would be terrible that all White male students were crimanalized because of that. Schools should have protocols and security measures to prevent gun violence and better tracking of mental health issues among ALL students.
Similarly, schools should have comprehensive discipline measures to handle big and small infractions for ALL students. It is important to have some support for disruptive students that gets them educated while at the same time gets them out of a classroom that they are disrupting. This disciplining should not be left on the teacher. Instead these students should be recorded in the classroom to make a case that they are indeed being disruptive. |

It doesn't matter if black students have more incidents.
If 24 black kids commit offense A and 2 white kids commit offense A ... the 2 white kids don't get lesser discipline because only less white kids committed offense A. There is no argument for that. |
That is NOT what this HuffPo article says. It merely says that Black kids and kids with disabilities are disciplined more. Maybe, just maybe, because they are more disruptive, and drag all the other kids (of all races) who are not disruptive, down. I know, I cannot believe I had the audacity to even suggest that. Huffpo is a journalistic disgrace so, not surprised that someone would link this and try to make more out of it than it deserves. |
