Robinson Secondary

Thoughts? I love the neighborhood but reluctant due to the size of the school. One of my children is an introvert.

Introverts often like the anonymity of big places.

There are definitely reasons to dislike a big school, but I'd ask more questions before ruling it out.

I went there. Graduated in 2003. I would say you don't really feel the hugeness of it while you are there. It's broken down into sub-schools and that helps. With so many kids, I think everyone finds a niche.

Interesting. That's sounds like a good idea for a large school.

My kid is an introvert and she was very happy and successful there.

What did she find stressful?

All they care about at that school is sports.

Not true. My nerdy boys love Robinson. They have something for everyone. Great school, teachers and staff.

This. Robinson, along with Lake Braddock and West Springfield, are all normal schools. It's not crazy over here.

This was our experience at that school as well. They cared a lot about sports and a reasonable amount about other extracurricular activities, but very little about core academic classes, which is the main point of school after all. Very glad we moved away.

We love Robinson. But I think you get out what you put in. If you're child does not join clubs or participate in the Robinson spirit a smaller school may be better. Not every school is right for every child.

I have a freshman & a junior at RSS. I think the school is great! The size may seem intimidating from the outside, but it's not as scary as it seems. Agree with the PP about sub-schools. Also, 7th/8th graders largely kept separate from the high schoolers. Both my kids are focused on studies and the school has excellent academics and great staff - I've never had a bad interaction with any of them. RSS has some AP classes, but it's an IB school, so that's a plus if that's your style and a minus if it isn't (my daughter transferred here for IB before we moved within the boundary). The only drawback that I have noticed as a result of the size of the school is that it can be very competitive to get on a sports team (or many other groups that you have to try out for and have limited numbers accepted - though not ALL groups are like that). Good luck with your decision, OP!

NP. Also considering Robinson with an introverted kid. Which activities/sports are no cut?

My kid goes to another school, but for an introvert wanting no cut, theatre tech is a good option. They end up with a really tight group. One of the music classes is good too, especially choir or band.

Cross country is usually no cut. Robinson has really large lacrosse teams, so a better chance of participation. The musical usually cast all kids in the chorus ( maybe your kid isn’t the lead, but they will be in the show).

Hey- this will probably help. https://robinsonss.fcps.edu/student-life-activities/high-school-activities
My experience at Lake Braddock ( similar school) was really positive. There is something for all kids
