| What luxuries did you give up to be able to afford a family? |
| My career |
|
Everything. All luxuries and extras.
However, keep in mind that we chose an educated nanny over daycare and private school over public school. We didn't buy a house until youngest DD was in elementary school. We made choices based on what we believed was best for our kids. |

Living in a newly renovated/newly built space - but we don’t want them to grow up like that anyway (“Don’t touch that wall!!! Crayon again?!”)
Almost all eating out. Too expensive and not fun with young kids anyway. We save it for an occasional date night. Way less than we used to. Furnishing our home. We just can never fit it in the budget. But again, I’m glad bc they can destroy our older stuff, and we can start upgrading in a few years again. Def expensive clothes shopping for me. Clothing 5 people on a budget for 2 means we have to think harder/shop smarter, instead of dropping $$ on gorgeous Nordstrom stuff of great quality. Travel. Though, we finally figure out how to make it work within our budget, and we’ll be traveling this summer, and plan to continue. |
| Time to work out - see the thread asking why don’t people work out. No regrets! |
| Gave up an international concert career. I am stuck in a dead end suffocating borderline abusive relationship to take care of my SPED kid who suffered nerve damage as a toddler due to a bad fall. Now in College, he was able to make the Dean’s list. In addition to working full time, I have to cook special meals and tutor him daily. Happy to do so as he beat all the odds. |
| Traveling. I had to have extra pages added to my passport in my 20s. I had my kid 12 years ago and I haven't used my passport since. I do look forward to using it again sometime. |
| Nothing - Having kids is a choice. I left my career but it was my choice and I was much happier at home. |
| Mostly just eating out- daycare is expensive! Other than that we still go on vacations and travel. |
| My sanity. Peace and quiet with my husband. |
| Nothing |
| International travel, spontaneous date nights, time for sports...I could go on and on. But it was all worth it. |
