I’m 42, have super dry and somewhat sensitive skin, and am using Retin A a couple of times a week. I am trying to build up to using it more frequently as my skin hopefully tolerates it better and doesn’t get so dry and flaky. For those with similar dry skin, what other facial products do you use with Retin A? |
There are several layers of moisture you can add into your routine besides a regular cream: mists, essence, sheet masks, emulsion, sleeping masks. |
Any particular recommendations? |
I have found it important to use a good moisturizer in addition to Retin A. In the evenings I wash with a gentle cleanser (like Cetaphil), then moisturize (also with Cetaphil lotion, though sometimes I experiment with other moisturizers, and when it's really dry I sometimes use Cerave cream). 5-10 minutes after washing and moisturizing I apply the Retin A. Retin A has definitely helped with my acne and fine lines, but it makes my skin redder and more sensitive so I try to stick with gentle products. If you want to try a sheet mask, I like the Benton Snail Bee masks, which are pretty cheap on Amazon. They are soothing and not too sticky. |
At night I wash with Cetaphil, wait a few minutes, then apply Retin-A, wait a few minutes, then moisturize with Cerave night moisturizer. During the day I wash, apply Dapzone Gel, then moisturize with Cetaphil with sunscreen (either 15 or 50, depending on what I'm doing that day).
You might want to try a weaker dose of Retin-A. Also make sure you are moisturizing day and night. |
I do aquaphor. I do retin-a 2-3X/week. I have to use aquaphor at least 2 nights in a row after using retin-a to not have dry flaky skin. but my skin looks fabulous! |
Make sure you're only using a pea-sized amount of Retin-A. |
Not pp, but what is your budget? There are great products out there for reasonable prices. For what is worth, this is my pm routine: 1 - wash with Philosophy Purity (I am trying it out... so far so good) 2 - Toner R+F reverse line (trying it out as well) 3 - Copper Amino Isolate Serum by NIOD (https://niod.com/product/nid-copper-amino-isolate-serum-21-15ml) 4 - NIOD Hyaluronic complex (https://niod.com/product/multi-molecular-hyaluronic-complex-15ml?redir=1) 5 - SK-II essence 6 - The Ordinary salicylic acid 2% OR Lactic acid 10% (I alternate) 7 - Adapalene 8 - Drunk Elephant Glycolic Night Serum 9 - The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10 - The ordinary macula oil 11- Drunk Elephant lala whipping cream moisturizer mixed with DE Protini and DE B-Hydra. I used The Ordinary peeling solution once a week and Drunk Elephant baby facial once a week. When I use these, I follow up with a mask. I love JAYJUN Baby Pure Shining Mask - LOVE IT! This week I will try a different one - Dr. Jart ceramidin mask. I am also trying this week Ohui Miracle Moisture Ampoule, but I am on day 3 and it is a 7 days regime... so, can't say anything about it yet. I DID NOT/DO NOT think SK II masks are worth the cost at all. They are not bad, but I didn't see anything different after using it like some reviewers do/did. Jayjun is amazing though. I bought it from Walmart because I don't trust amazon sellers for that (some people were complaining about fake products). Plus, it is MUCH cheaper than SKII... the results on my skin don't even compare... You don't need to follow my routine - it is a lot, but I truly have fun trying new things. If you had to choose something from my routine for hydration, I would choose: 3, 4, 10, 11 plus DE baby facial and Jayjun wask once/week. |
Wow, now that is a routine! Do you have amazing skin? |
I can't follow this. Do you use Retin-A? |
Celes oil from skinbiology |
NP - do you find the Cetaphil SPF 50 feels like sunscreen when on? I just started using it and the jury is still out for me. I was hopeful because most of the moisturizers I have tried have retinol in them and I feel like it's too much drying. |
This is OP. I'm already on the lowest prescription dose and only use it 2-3/week. And I moisturize religiously morning and night and sometimes in between. I have tried Cerave, but it's not moisturizing enough for me. I wonder if I don't need to splurge for La Mer or the like. My skin is REALLY dry. |
Please for the love of all that is holy please tell me you don't use all of those acids (r+ f toner, the ordinary acids, DE night serum, azelaic acid) at once. I assume you don't because your moisture barrier would be destroyed but it reads that way. |
I also have extremely dry skin, moreso after beginning my retin-a regimen. I use Avene Tolerance Extreme Cream, which was provided by my dermatologist. It works wonders! |
