Can we talk NYC neighborhoods for a weekend stay?

As another poster my husband and I are planning a weekend in NY quite soon. We are keen on the Sofitel but equally we care about the neighborhood - we are casual people, love great food but not the scene. Would like to know we could wonder out to great bars and not have to plan something as a destination. Is this possible in any neighborhood if you know where to go or are some areas better than others?
