Does anyone know what schools most of the Holton girls usually come from? Thanks.
The answer in the old days was Primary Day, but I'm curious if that is still the case with the current third-graders?
PP -- For Holton girls starting in the third grade -- almost all of them are either legacies and/or from Primary Day. It is fairly hard to come in as a third grader without being either a legacy or a Primary Day kid. For later years, Holton has kids coming from a number of different places including Norwood, WES, Nat'l Presb, publics, montessoris, Congressional in VA, Cath grade schools, etc. So, it really depends on the year the student is entering the school.
The legacy thing works for us!...but that's very interesting about so many Primary Day kids. I was one of several in my third-grade class who didn't go there, but the class was smaller then, and I wondered whether the feeder situation had changed.
H.A.S. has actually cut the number of spots for entering third graders and is expanding in MS and HS. So, it's pretty hard to get in as a third-grader w/o a legacy connection or Primary Day background. Of course, H.A.S. really does believe in diverszity big time -- so a diversity kid will have a good shot.
11 girls from Lowell's graduating class got offers to Holton this year. Pretty impressive.
That is unprecedented for Lowell. Holton did have the smartest set of twins ever that graduated a few years ago...both go to the same Ivy. They are geniuses. They graduated Lowell before they went to Holton. |
I would not worry about PDS. A Holton teachers told me that Holton is not overly impressed with PDS.
wow...Lowell has changed! 11 girls? that must have been 1/3 of the class. I can't imagine anyone I knew when my kids went to Lowell who would even consider Holton. Too stressful, traditional, etc... Maybe Lowell is the new academic superpower school (Or Holton has gone way progressive)
Holton is very, very hard...so Lowell must have changed!
All right Lowell boosters, settle down. Settle down.
Lowell's new(ish) head has made academics more rigorous. She also networks effectively with target schools to enhance Lowell students' chances of admissions.
How do you know she networks "effectively"? I'm just curious about how you would have this information. |
Is this really necessary? It appears to me that people are commenting based on their experiences - why is it necessary for you to assume the worst? |
I am SO Damn Tired of you posters who scream "booster-booster" whenever someone says something positive about a school that isn't Sidwell-Maret-GDS or a Cathedral School. There are lots of great schools in Washignton that are the equal of the four that so mnay sychophants love. I do not have ANY connection to Lowell, and never have. I never even looked at it for my children. I do think however, that it is excellent to hear about Lowell's (or any school's) recent successes. Great job, Lowell! Clearly if they are getting a large number of students into Holton, they are doing many things very, very well. Stating the truth is not "boosting."
