To parents with older kids: If your child was shy around adults, did they grow out of it?

My DS is shy around adults, and he is 6 yo. (Although he is very easy going and relaxed around kids his own age.) He just won't talk to adults, including teachers and neighbors, even if I'm there. I've told him that it's ok to talk to strangers if I'm with him, but still nothing.

Do they grow out of this shyness around adults? And how can I help him feel less shy and talk to adults when I'm around?
