Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
|
Lots of posters seem annoyed Reed isn’t being evaluated to be an option site like other schools nearby. Let’s put it back on the table and evaluate it on the merits.
Like McKinley, using the size criteria it is too big. But it is more centrally located than many of these schools. It is on a major road like some SB members seem to think is important. Is close to a lot of other schools. Has good public bus service being on Washington Blvd. Can have trailers to grow if needed to help balance enrollment. |
| Thank you. There should be no sacred cows here. While we are at it, put back on the table whether we should keep all of these option programs. |
| The SB could keep the neighborhood promise and make it a hybrid school. It will have buses anyways. Either Reed or McKinley are in the right location and the right size. |

ALL schools should have been on the table. Not fair to ha e all of these back room deals.
They still could fix the weird boundaries even if Reed went option. |
| This. Why are we talking about taking a school away from its community at Nottingham or McKinley when we have a school that doesn't even exist yet that can serve the purpose. Why are Reed & the option programs being allowed to set the agenda here.? Reed is already going to have 7 buses. What's 2 or 3 more? |

The problem is everyone is afraid of the Westover bullies. Their civic associations are militant and I have seen some of them get extremely personal.

Oh, please! The reason it isn't being considered is they are no longer being handcuffed by the status quo. They made a mistake having 3 schools within a mile of each other (Tuck, Nott, Discovery) and now are looking at whether or not it makes sense to fix that. The location of Reed is perfect for a neighborhood school b/c it can actually fill with neighbors. For that reason, Tuckahoe SHOULD be under consideration. They are trying to make a decision on what makes sense, not put b/c some existing PTAs try to bully them. It's such a pathetic, selfish arguement to say that a neighborhood doesn't need a neoghborhood school b/c they've been bussed all over the place for years. The kdis are there. The neighborhood school makes sense.
Both Tuckahoe and Jamewtown should be on the list, but not Reed. |
Much of the Tucakhoe and McKinley community lives around Reed. Your argument actually indicates that Reed should be a neighborhood school. Why are those families any less deserving? Also, Reed won't have 7 buses. That number is based on worst-case scenario. All schools have to be built for worst case, but the reality is that they won't be bussing kids within the 1/2-1 mile zone. |
Case in point on the Westover bullies. ALL schools should be on the table, including Reed. |

I can clarify the bus/walk zone confusion. The initial numbers only included what was within 1/2 mile from Reed on the same side of Wash Blvd. They did not include the walkers in the potential expanded zone, which includes everybody on the other side of Washington. The number of walkers will be much greater than 301 when the other side of the street is added. See note below:
Effective walk zone to include: 14040, 14041, 14042, 14050, 14051, 14060, 16060, 16061, 16080, 16081 |
| Nottingham does love to push around Westover/McKinley. |
| This topic is already being discussed extensively in multiple threads, including this one: http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/210/719248.page |
