So is Wilson HS getting screwed in the modernization process?

Anonymous
I've seen a petition drive and some neighborhood listserv discussion, but I can't really tell. Are other DCPS HSs happy with their modernization plans/budgets?

No idea but FYI. Maybe someone who attends will post highlights. I'm interested for DC but cannot attend.

DATE: Thursday, Oct. 1st, 2009
TIME: 6-9 p.m.
PLACE: Woodrow Wilson HS Auditorium
3950 Chesapeake St. NW

The Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization ("OPEFM") recently scheduled a Community Meeting at Wilson on Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to present and discuss the design plans. Following the presentation, we have been told that OPEFM will have a question and answer session and that the full project team, including the architects, will be in attendance. We hope that this event will provide a great opportunity for the community to learn about the project, ask questions, and have all concerns addressed.

Also interest in this goes beyond HS to MS since current MSers will be the ones who get to attend the modernized facility.

What is the conflict?

The arguments seem to be that adaptive reuse (OPEFM's strategy) is the wrong approach for everything but the main building and that Wilson is getting fewer $$ per student for modernization than other DCPS HSs.

But I was hoping for something more concrete and comparative from a facilities perspective -- e.g. Wilson needs X, other schools are getting X, Wilson isn't.

I have a friend who is an architect and has been working away on the new Wilson. Whether the plans ever come to fruition is anyone's guess but I bet they step on it. Parents are so happy with Deal this year, Rhee will want to keep those families in the system if she can.

Do you know whether your friend has been working for OPEFM/DCPS or as a parent-advocate or for the Wilson Management Corporation? Sounds like the WMC/school community had one plan and OPEFM/DCPS has another. But that DCPS controls the $$ and WMC's plan is more expensive.

I'm not sure who hired her firm but she certainly has been working away.
