Extreme vomitting during pregnancy

Anonymous
Has anyone been so sick with vomitting during their pregnancy that their OB prescribed them something? With my son, I was completely fine. Not a single ounce of morning sickness, nothing. Now with this pregnancy (11 weeks tomorrow) I'm so sick.

From say week 7 to 10 it's been nausea mainly with occasional gags. I've tried it all. Preggy Pop Drops - make me gag. Ginger tea daily. Now about 10 minutes after I eat something, it comes up violently. They said it will hopefully be gone BY WEEK 16 (UGH THAT LONG) but said they would prescribe me something that will help. Reglan. I asked about Phenigen & Zofran and they said first we have to try out Reglan... as most insurance companies won't pay for the other two as they are very pricy.

She said continue to eat "light things" i.e. no steak dinners. I wish I could eat a steak dinner. I can't even tolerate cottage cheese or toast. Yesterday was clear chicken broth all day. Ugh. She said also that the baby will take nutrients from my body and will be ok.

Has anyone had it this bad? When did it end? I'm sure I'm not even as bad as some folks with IVs etc. Oh I hate the taste of gatorade and even the thought of it. I wonder if there is something similar that I can try.

Ginger ale? Crackers?

My problem isn't morning sickness really, it's that my stomach is so compressed by the baby (38 weeks now), that I can't eat a full meal. But my eyes are larger than my stomach, so I usually end up eating too much, then throwing it back up.

I can absolutely relate!!!! I have been taking a generic form of zofran that disolves under my tongue...to me that was the key as there was no way that something I had to swallow was going to stay down. The prescription is for more often, however, due to insurance fights and other reasons, I only take it once a day (and now that I am 29 weeks there are days I don't need it all). For a long time I felt like I was living on goldfish, all-fruit popsicles, and red gatorade. Many days I would force myself to eat something more for dinner with the hope that at least some of the nutrients would sink in before I lost it. I did not start to feel significantly better until week 27. I still have moments but it isn't anything like the first and second trimester (these days I can even brush my teeth without gagging right away)! Hopefully, you will be like the majority of women that feel better MUCH sooner than that!

I was vomiting quite a bit and Vitamin B6 plus 1/2 Unisom at night did wonders for me, recommended by my midwife. It's the same combination from a anti-nausea prescription available and widely used by pregnant women in Canada.

I also ate a lot of Luna Bars, usually one each morning before getting out of bed. And, peppermint ice cream, watermelon and canteloupe were some other favorites.

Feel better!

Yes. I had to take a week off work and I lost about 5lbs in the first trimester. I'm also on the Unisom/B6 combo. I still was slightly nauseous after I started it, but it really was like night and day; I went from lying on the couch in grotty pajamas for four days to a short walk outside and eating the next day, and then back to work the day after.

FYI, the Unisom/B6 combo -- both are over the counter drugs, so no need to hassle about insurance. And not super pricey. The generic Unisom is about $7 for a pack of 32.

I am 15wks pregnant with #2 & have been on zofran since wk 8. I am sorry to say that I still throw up everyday & feel nauseas pretty much all day & night. It actually got worse this week & I am vomitting several times a day. I am able to keep some 'bread type' foods down but not really anything else. I must say though that I don't know anyone else that has ever been in my position so good luck to you & odds are you'll feel better in the second trimester.
