Neuropysch for DC w/ Apraxia of Speech

Anonymous
My soon to be 7-yr old DS has Apraxia and I'm looking for recommendations for private providers who conduct Neuropyschs who are good with children with speech and language disorders. Thanks in advance!

I have a DS with ADHD/anxiety/apraxia and a severe language disorder. He is a complex case (and I've got an older DS with run-of-the-mill ADHD/anxiety who outgrew his MERLD diagnosis by 5th grade). When I needed an IEE for a neuropsych, I used Dr. Katia Fredriksen at Stixrud and got an excellent report from her. I thought she and the other Stixrud staff (who administer some of the assessments) did a great job in teasing out and separating how his disorders were impacting him. Even my hard to please education consultant was impressed - and went up with us for the debrief.

Thank you for your response. I have seen Stixrud quite a bit on my searches and so that's helpful to know there's a staffer there that you were pleased with re: teasing out the disorders. I definitely need that in our case. Appreciate it!

Hi OP,

At that age we had a neuropsych evaluation done by our child's school and it was fine -- however we did a lot of homework and insisted that all testing be done with instrument made for non-verbal students.

Even if your child is verbal now, they likely use shorter sentences and may be slower to form answers due to the apraxia and associated language issues.

We already went the school route and due to the limited number of tests and the testing protocols (e.g. time limits, only asking question once, etc) this did not give us a complete picture. I need a private neuropych with someone that has experience with testing children with severe language disorders.

I'm curious about which school did this. In FCPS, they are only able to do psycho-educational testing. FCPS doesn't have sufficient depth in their assessments to do the neuro-psych testing.

It was a DC charter school. They hired a neuropsychologist to do it because my DC’s learning profile was pretty complex.
