Virginia Gov. Northam vetoes bill banning sanctuary cities

Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) vetoed a bill Monday that would have prohibited the establishment of sanctuary cities, an issue that dominated his race for governor last year.

The bill was a single sentence: “No locality shall adopt any ordinance, procedure, or policy that restricts the enforcement of federal immigration laws.”

Northam suggested the legislation would require Virginia cities and towns to shoulder the burden of enforcing federal immigration law, either by deputizing local police or by holding undocumented inmates in local lockups. He called the measure “unnecessary and divisive.”

Del. Ben Cline (R-Rockbridge), who sponsored the bill, said the measure was intended only to ban localities from interfering federal immigration actions, not press them into service.

“Ensuring that Virginia localities abide by federal immigration laws is a matter of public safety and upholding the rule of law, “ Cline said. “Governor Northam’s veto of my bill to ban sanctuary cities in Virginia is indefensible.”

Northam walked a fine line on illegal immigration during the race for governor last year, when Republican rival Ed Gillespie accused him of being soft on sanctuary cities and MS-13 gang members.

Northam generally dismissed the claims as political bluster since Virginia has no declared “sanctuary cities,” a term generally used to mean localities that do not cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

But at one point during the campaign, Northam said he would support a ban on sanctuary cities if any sprang up in Virginia.

If that were to occur, then the legislature could address it in a way that was narrowly tailored to the actual problem and wasn’t overly broad or restrictive. Do you really need to pretend that a fact known for decades doesn't exist? The incidious thing about Sanctuary Cities is that they break the law - it's not that citizens enact laws to create them, it's that they flagrantly *ignore* existing laws, which circumvents citizens.

For one, the sheriff of FFx just recently announced she won't be keeping illegal immigrants in jail for ICE to retrieve them. You can argue technicalities all day - this is deliberate and inappropriate.

That announcement in no way violated the law, Fairfax decided to stop participating in a voluntary ICE program that most Virginia localities don’t participate in because it was taking up too many county resources and opening Fairfax up to the risk of lawsuits that ICE wasn’t going to indemnify them for. The bill Northam vetoed would have had zero impact on Fairfax’s decision here.

Property values have been increasing for years and there have recently been record numbers of NMSFs. No litter is my neighborhood, either. Arlington schools have a higher percentage of poor kids and the best Loudoun high schools would be about average in Fairfax.
