Preschool and Daycare Discussion
Looking for immediate preschool care for my 3 1/2 year old son. Want good teachers and not just a babysitter. Considering full or part time.
DON'T choose Fairlakes Children's Center (more like a babysitter plus has other issues I won't go into). I've heard good things about Bean Tree (although I've heard it's pricey).
Our neighbors go to sleepy hollow preschool out in Annandale and they love it--not sure if that is near you since "Fairfax area" is pretty broad.
Fairfax Presbyterian has an excellent program, plus it's accredited by NAEYC. I also liked Providence Nursery School. Both of these schools are co-ops, but Providence's involves more work. We had considered moving to Fairfax and then moved elsewhere, but these were my top two choices. Good luck!
where in fairfax? big county. My neighbor teaches at Parkwood in Vienna and it's got a good reputation - it's part-time. My friend has her kids at United methodist Wesleyan in Oakton - also part-time - and raves about it. I've heard good things about the Appletree schools, which offer part and full-time. I've heard mixed things about Merritt on rt 50. If I lived closer, I'd probably send my kid to Hunter Mill Day School - full-time, not very expensive, and seems really cool. There are also a bunch of Montessori schools, but most of them don't seem to have summer programs, which could be a problem for working parents.

My older DD went to Parkwood in Vienna for K and it is a lovely little school. Cheap as can be too LOL! It is, to say the least, quirky, but a very nice little school.
For preschool, both my kids went to the JCC on Little River. A well run, very solid, developmentally appropriate school. You do need to be a JCC member, but you do not need to be Jewish (there are MANY non-Jewish families there). Older DD went a few years ago, younger DD is still there. They also have a very large and popular summer camp program. My neighbor sends her kids to Cedar Lane Montessori School. They have full time available and also a summer camp program. I hear good things about Annandale Coop. But I agree it depends very much on what you mean by "Fairfax". |
Thanks for all the information. We live in the Fair Lakes area but could travel a short distance if the school was right.
